The words “lose” and “loose” have the same vowel sound (and for some reason the extra “o” changes /z/ to /s/).
There are no other words ending in -ose that have the /u/ sound
Many words ending in -oose exist that have an /u/ sound, including the very common word, “choose”, which has the same /uz/ sound that “lose” has at the end
I never get these spellings mixed up but I can absolutely understand why someone would.
The OED has been like this for at least 15 years (possibly longer but that’s when I first encountered it). So I wouldn’t consider this an appropriate example of the enshittification that’s been taking place of late.
I mean you could put dashes on either side of “all of them” potentially instead of commas, but commas also work, especially in more poetic prose. Where would you straight-up remove a comma from the line?
I can say that I have frequently gone through this very situation with my kids, where I’ve had to tell myself that I won’t be able to have this kind of time forever. And it’s not that I actually didn’t want to do it — I wanted to do be around my kid and see them be their wonderful self. I almost always would come away with something they did that brought me joy. It’s just that with young kids, there’s so much stuff to deal with all the time, you always wish you had a bit more time purely for yourself.
But it’s sort of like when you go on a big vacation, and you venture out and fill every day with activities and adventure. Maybe some mornings you feel like just watching TV at the hotel after so many days of activities, but you power through it because there are things you still want to do, and this vacation will be over before you know it.
I don’t think the problem was the photo, the problem was the reaction of disgust, and the fact that the whole purpose of the photo was to laugh at the ugly person. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say maybe that’s not the best way to go
In the US we obviously have had the problem of tipping for some time, but it was covid that sent everything completely off the rails. Once lockdown started, you starting tipping places even though you weren’t dining, and then even places where I wouldn’t have tipped before, if they asked for a tip I was usually giving a tip out of sympathy, and so on. And then lockdown ended but these things never went away. They came in under the radar at a time when nobody would protest the idea.
I also find the limited number of posts and comments keep me at a healthy level of browsing. On Reddit I could get sucked down the rabbit hole of even one post, reading comments and replying to stuff for hours. There’s really very little of value that can ever be accomplished at that depth.
I love the idea of the villain explaining the whole thing to the captive and at the end being like, “okay, I’m about to put the blindfold and noise canceling headphones on, so this is the last chance for any other questions about how this works”
We can look at history and see that it often doesn’t go this way when you tear down your government. It’s naive to just act like this is a straightforward and obvious way to go
Most modern linguists wouldn’t take a position on this at all, and would tell you that you’re conflating Language and spelling. Most linguists don’t study writing systems, because they are a different thing from Language. Language is an evolving system that is always changing, and people develop the ability just by being around other people as they grow up, whether someone is teaching it to them or not. It just happens naturally. Reading/writing is more formalized, has to be taught, and many people in the world never master it. Many languages don’t even have an official written form. It’s not the same sort of thing.

What popular quote are you tired of hearing?
Bonus points if it’s usually misused/misunderstood by the people who say it
