Yeah it’s weird how privacy and piracy have blended together over the years.
With some games you need to pirate them if you don’t want a Russian nesting doll of launchers and accounts that are able to leak your information and fill your computer with bloat.
I do find the argument interesting some YouTubers try to make about ad blockers being a form of piracy.
When was the last time you saw a dedicated front facing flash? I think most of the time these days it’s a quick increase and brightness and your screen turning white.
I make backups in case of disc or disc reader failures and download them through other means on occasion because I can’t be bothered removing the drive from the console or setting up an FTP server.
It might be other platforms not saying a comment has been deleted or users here being more likely to engage with content and delete it for various reasons.
For example a post said “What was wierdest gift you’ve received this years?” and someone may have missed the this year and told a story about a prior Christmas. They could have also accidentally replied to a different comment instead of the post itself.
Lemmy also uses up and down votes like Reddit so maybe they got a few too many down votes and just deleted it.
I get you. I like receiving honest real reviews for things rather than be advertised to. Let their quality speak for it. I also hate even minor spoilers for movies/TV shows/video game that you see in trailers.
I know some of family don’t because they mostly rely on mobile devices and devices like Chromecasts where installing ad blockers can be a challenge. They don’t use traditional computers.
They know apps like NewPipe exist but the effort to port things over or not get recommendations is too much for them.
I do use ad blockers and open source front ends/software/alternatives. Ex. AntennaPod instead of Spotify for podcasts and Linux instead of Windows because I didn’t like ads in the start menu (amongst numerous other things).
Some of the subreddits I follow are related to emulation and piracy which has caused some subreddits to get banned or at least take action to limit legal threats. When the Reddit blackout happened a lot of them went down and said they were shifting here. I find they’re a little more open to discussion than other places that just copy and paste some old post or refer you to a Wiki
On the off chance the checksum on yours is different, you don’t want it somehow noted and flagged by … anyways, levels of paranoia I get and respect. They can’t take that thumb drive if its air-gapped!!
Do you think I’m worried about Microsoft coming after me for backing up my copy of Halo?
The one I’m using is becoming so buggy to the point of being unusable. It was never really great tbh, what are most people using?
It would probably help if you mentioned which app you are having issues with and what device you are using. I recently stopped using Jerboa because of login issues and started using Voyager. I find it’s less of a smooth experience but some of the other bugs I had with Jerboa like back spacing removing the space before the previous word aren’t present.
As an added question, are bookmarks associated with the lemmy account or the app?
