Yeah, to secure a military vehicle in a lot, they use a regular padlock. Guarantee a key is lost every quarter, and the unit in charge has to go out and cut it to get access to their own vehicle. This guy came in with bolt cutters, and then used the combat lock on the door he entered in. The only possible way a policeman without heavy ordnance got in with boltcutter, and the thief used a combat lock, was if there was another door that was padlocked closed, but not combat locked.

Tldr; yeah, you can still steal a military vehicle if you can sneak into an army base with a pair of boltcutters. It sure as shit won't be loaded, and if you pick the wrong one it might not even start up because they all breakdown regularly, and aren't clearly marked as such.

Comparing compression in AV1, x264, and x265 (kbin.social)

I recently got it into my head to compare the various popular video codecs in an effort to better understand how av1 works and looks compared to x264 and x265. I also had ideas of using a intel video card to compress a home video security setup, and what levels of compression I would need to get good results....

I consider the 'good enough' level to be, if I didn't pixel peep, I couldn't tell the difference. The visually lossless levels were the first crf levels where I couldn't tell a quality difference even when pixel peeping with imgsli. I also included VAMF results, which say that the quality loss levels are all the same at a pixel level.

I know that av1, x264, and x265 all have different ways of compressing video. Obviously, the whole point of this was to get a better idea of what that actually looked like. Everything on the visually lossless section is completely indistinguishable to my eyes, and everything on the good enough section has very minor bits of compression only noticed when i'm looking for it in a still image. This does not require the same codec to compare and contrast with.

Frankly, for anything other than real-time encoding, I don't actually consider encoding time to be a huge deal. None of my encodes were slower than 3fps on my 5800x3d, which is plenty for running on my media server as overnight job. For real-time encoding, I would just grab a Intel Arc card, and redo the whole thing since the bitrates will be different anyways.

Visually lossless means I couldn't tell an image difference even when pixel peeping with imgsli. Good enough means I couldn't tell a difference in video, but could occasionally see a compression artifact in imgsli.

RARBG like 4K rips, any group making similar sized movies?

Sorry if this was asnwered before, but couldn’t find it. I can’t seem to find any groups that usually release really small sized 4k rips like rarbg used to do. Movies went from ~5GB to ~20GB, and I really can’t tell that much difference in quality that justifies 4x the size....

Don’t bother transcoding 4k

i have a cheap 1650 that can do four 4k transcodes on the fly with no issue. It was a 100$ upgrade. Frankly, this is a bad take. Obviously every situation is different, but unless you have a family of twenty that you're sharing your server with, 4k encoding is incredibly easy to do these days.

It's an installation - a miltary base. Guarantee the workers had family spaces / on base housing in it. Considering the size of it, whole cities worth of people.

On the other side, it's also really hard to keep warm even in 0/32 degree weather when you're not being active.

Are movie and show file sizes more efficient than they were years ago?

This may be a stupid question, but I just got back into pirating some shows and movies and realize that many of the QxR files are much smaller than what I downloaded in the past. Is it likely that I am sacrificing a noticeable amount of quality if I replace my files with the smaller QxR ones?...

op is describing the source video file bitrate, not the target codec bitrate. 6000kbps compresses to different amounts depending on the codec and quality used. Op doesnt mention the quality factor for the codecs, so this is less than helpful.

Unless you switch to using crf, which tries to give a consistent quality level, damn the file size.

Yeah, jellyfin isnt the greatest about handling the space around a movie. I also have similiar issues. I usually end up playing the movies in vlc and pressing 'c' until the video fits the screen best.

My PC is hacked

I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?

Im sorry, but, for things like games, raid isn't really going to give you a perceivable speed increase. Most games today get the most use from the random read, where raid does best is with things like sequencial writes (large movies, etc).

Raid0 will add to your throughput, but your seek times will still be the same regardless of how many drives you add to it.

Here in the us, a 2tb ssd is less than 50$. Im sorry its not the same where you are at.

I know the others suggest raid0, but since youre doing three drives im gonna suggest raid 5 instead. You don't lose out on read performance compared to raid0, just write speeds. More importantly, one drive failing wont actually break anything.

Yes. It doesn't work as "you're already" and really, it doesn't work all thay well as "you are already" either. This is almost yoda levels of rearrangement.

It makes the most sense as "you already are".
