I’m super curious what this would look like in a western country where poverty is different. It would need a lot more money for the equivalent payment so I guess Kenya is easier to find money for, but for example I wonder if people are as likely to start a new business or do we not have the same market gaps due to large companies or franchises filling those gaps?

When Google advertises that if you raise your hand in real life then Google Meet will mark you as having your hand raised, this reality just got a little bit closer.

Lemmy Instance Assistant It does things like if someone links a post and the link takes you to the post on another instance, it adds a button to show the post on your home instance. You can also right click on a page (say, an article on a news site) or image and choose the option to share it on lemmy, which creates a new post. It also has stuff to help you when you click a link to a community but the community is not federated to your server, or you can go to the list of communities on another instance and it will have links to take you to that community on your home instance. That sort of thing. Basically the beginnings of a RES for lemmy.

I also like Dictionary Anywhere, which lets you double click on a word to get a definition, a bit like the one Google one for Chrome.

There are also various container extensions such as a Facebook or Google one, that isolates those sites to attempt to prevent that activity being associated with your activity on other sites. It can be a little annoying to get used to but I use them. The annoying thing is that when you click say a google site from a search result on duckduckgo, it closes the duckduckgo tab and opens the site in a google container, but then you can’t click back to go back to the search results.

The general container tabs extension is good too. It keeps separate cookies per container. So say if you have 3 different microsoft accounts, you can create different containers. Then you can open a new tab in a specific container and it will remember the account you logged into last time in that specific container, but doesn’t affect other containers or tabs not in a container.

I mean, the humans think it’s cool to take perfectly good pants, tear holes in them until there are hardly any pants, and wear them like that. Maybe pants are even cooler?

@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I thought this was intentional? They have control panel stuff somewhat similar to the old style, but build a settings app for the less technical people so they can find common stuff without getting overwhelmed?

Dave, to selfhosted in How often do you back up?

Sealed, airtight, and waterproof but what if both banks burn down at the same time? You didn’t mention fire-proof.

Dave, to selfhosted in What's wrong with using cloudflared?
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

They also say “Cloudflare DDoS protection secures websites and applications while ensuring the performance of legitimate traffic is not compromised.”, with a tick to indicate this is included in the Free tier.

You are honestly the first person I’ve heard complain about Cloudflare failing to protect against DDoS attacks. However, I have no doubt that not having Cloudflare, I would fare no better. So still seems worthwhile to me.

Yeah, I think it’s a bit different. The Kenya study showed the monthly payments for 2 years was the least effective, which is what the Finland study did. The Finland one was also only a small number of people, where the Kenya one did entire villiages.

Giving the entire society the payments is different than only certain people, so I’m keen to see a wider scale trial in a western country.

Though with that said, western countries and NGOs may well be able to fund widescale UBI for developing countries, and that may be more worthwhile on a global scale.

Dave, to asklemmy in Forgive me, but…
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

I’d like to see multi-reddit type functionality, so you can see each of the communities as one feed. And the ability to subscribe to that multi-lemmy.

Plus deduplication. One entry in the feed that covers all cross-posts (with some way to pick which comment feed you want to see - or hey, maybe combine them).

Dave, to memes in This is great. You should try it.

It’s only beginning, it has nowhere near the features of RES, and mainly it helps with issues related to lemmy federation. But if there’s something you want, the dev is pretty open to new feature suggestions.
