That’s just factually wrong. The Middle East (and by extension the Levant) has always been a hotbed of diversity because its unique geography.

You would have found anything from black to pale white (but tanned obviously) skin, black to blond/red hair, brown to blue eyes. Most were darker skinned and dark haired like a modern Middle Eastener, but it wasn’t a monoculture, like implied here.

Easiest counter example are the Scythians, but there are countless more.

we forgot like 95% of our native culinary practices with the world wars, globalization, industrial farming and the commodification of food. I’ve been getting into foraging and permaculture, and it’s insane how much amazing food you’re missing out on, if you’re just eating what someone else can profitably sell.

If you watch some videos on coastal foraging in the UK, it’s insane. There’s food everywhere. Even with just my amateur knowledge in foraging, there’s food everywhere.

Yeah I’ve had common evening-primrose, prickly lettuce, tall hedge mustard as spicy as wasabi, chicken of the woods killing our plum tree lol, now what looks like artist’s bracket too in our garden this year. But to be fair most of these seem to grow almost everywhere. Once you learn to identify one of these you will really see them everywhere.

I’m just a beginner and I live a totally different biome, not sure I can help you much. I guess learn the basics of foraging and plant&mushroom ID (like never eat something you aren’t certain you’ve identified correctly). See if there’s any local organizations that can help you out. If you’re a social type you could make friends with some local forager and gather seeds and plants to propagate. If not, buy some books about your local area, find a foraging YouTuber in your area. I generally use plant&mushroom ID apps to scan everything I see, look up the plant and what its uses are, what are common poisonous lookalikes. You will get the hang of it pretty quickly and have a few plants that you can confidently identify. I’ve looked it up and perhaps you can find these in your local area: Cattails, Watercress, Water Mint, Water Lily, wapato, Water Hyacinth, Elderberry, Pawpaw, Fiddlehead Ferns and it seems many of the culinary and medicinal mushrooms should grow where you live too.

I guess if you’re planning to grow non-natives too, you could try to plant some perannial/ self-propagating/hardy staple crops. Taro, water spinach, wild rice, lotus, sorghum etc… Perhaps the Chinampa technique works in a swamp? Perhaps you could use the swamp water for self-wicking raised garden beds to grow regular crops that are pretty hands off like sweet potatoes. Might want to do a water test to check for salinity and excess nutrients tho.

I guess you can always have some gator barbecue too, if you are so inclined.

Ideally our LEDs should emit a safe dose of UV-B and infrared too, because they are vital for vit D and melatonin production, both of which are extremely important for general health. As more and more of us become basement dwellers and winter depression enjoyers, this would help out a lot with public health.

That’s not true. We’ve evolved while being irradiated by the sun for literally billions of years. Your body has mechanisms to repair damaged DNA and kill+replace cells that are too damaged. Issues arise when the damage grows fast enough for your body to keep up repairs. E.g. you get a sun burn because you don’t have an adequate tan or you hug a reactor meltdown.

Supplements are an inadequate solution for many reasons.

  1. Vit D supplements barely get absorbed by the stommach. The only way to get adequate vitamin D levels with supplements is to take huge doses for like a month while testing your blood to see if levels are adequate.
  2. Most available Vit D supplements take a week to be metabolized into the active form.
  3. Vit D supplements can give you an overdose of Vitamin D and have severe negative health consequences.

Meanwhile half an hour of sunlight gives you healthy levels of Vit D without risk of overdose.

I’m not advocating for 1000W/m^2 UVB radiation blasting you 24/7, I’m talking about levels that are low enough that you can constantly be exposed to without a increase in risk.

And btw a lack of vitamin D causes severely bad health outcomes, even if it would cause a minor increase in skin cancer (which it doesn’t), the benefits of adequate vitamin D levels would vastly outweigh that risk.

Same with melatonin, supplements can’t replace the effect of exposure to infrared light. But at least with infrared people won’t spread misinformation about how there’s no safe levels.

You might not get 100% of your vit D levels this way, but perhaps just a fraction of it. Depends on how the risk benefit calculation works out.

and of course infrared is generally harmless as long as it’s not strong enough to cook you.

I think that is a feature of Google Assistant or some other Google product. It reads everything you have on your screen at any moment to give you “smart” help like easy opening of addresses or phone numbers.

yeah meanwhile iron is literally nescessary to make your blood transport oxygen. Mo and Be (and their alloys) just have similar strength to weight ratios, but they aren’t exactly practical drop in replacements. So yeah, I haven’t found anything better than steel, there’s just materials that are better in one or two aspects, but nothing with the versatility of steel. To be fair, we have thousands of years of research into steel, perhaps we can still find something better. Idk, maybe some high entropy alloy.
