How much does a creator's worldview influence whether you use their tech or consume their media?

Watching the drama around kagi unfold and it has me wondering how much you take into consideration a creator’s view on things like homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. when deciding to use a product. I think most of us have a bar somewhere (I would imagine very few on this website would ever consider registering on an altright...

I think it’s a little silly for anyone to grandstand on self-important moralistic consumption, because you can’t be a consumer of most things in the US without contributing to evil labor practices on some level.

Nearly everyone owns a computer or cell phone, and those are all produced with parts sourced unethically on some level or labor that is impoverished in a more remote or regressive part of the world.

And some artists are so incredibly good it’s impossible to ignore the quality even with their questionable morals, like Michael Jackson or Salvador Dali for example.

Everyone should make an effort to be mindful of their consumption, in my opinion, but I will always roll my eyes at people who are preachy about it. As some have mentioned, the secondary market is a great thing for trying to manage the problematic side of things, and even better, you’re upcycling when you by used.

I mean, the Tet Offensive didn’t really have a goal except to make the occupiers take the opposition seriously.

The UN says more than 1 in 4 people in Gaza are starving because of war (apnews.com)

The death toll in Gaza has climbed to at least 20,000 Palestinians. At least 1 in 200 people living in Gaza are now dead. 1 in 4 remaining Palestinians in Gaza are starving to death. I just can not comprehend this amount of violence and death in such a small area in such a short time. This is at a scale unheard of in any other...

And our president’s response is to drive our country further into debt in order to pay homage to Israel and pretend that they aren’t a pack of barbarians. It’s sickening.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I’d like to think that. Honestly I would.

Every indication we’ve seen so far is that they’ll vote Democrat and Republican, and the two major parties have exactly the same position with regard to our relations with Israel.

I hope you’re right, but I can’t help but be pessimistic about this.

The old may die, but the wealthy will still be in charge, and as we’ve seen with so many issues, like universal background checks or free insulin and birth control, the wealthy have more than enough power to silence the majority, and we enthusiastically vote for it every two years.

“Settler Violence” is way too sanitized a term for my taste.

I visited The Met recently, and I’m reasonably sure Washington Crossing the Delaware originated in the US.

Yeah, when I was standing in front of it it occurred to me that this was one of the most vulgarly nationalistic things I’ve ever seen.

Oh, wow.

I was not aware of that, but appreciate the info. If you ever see the real thing it has the most grotesque, masturbatory Trumpist American gilded frame.

I guarantee you every member of Congress used their classified briefings on Israel to make changes in their stock portfolio, and it’s not even illegal.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

No, we won’t.

History has proven out that no one cares what your political ideology is if you’re the candidate of change in a time of poverty, and thanks to Biden’s inaction, the massive increase in cost of living nationwide is going to sink his reelection prospects.

The Republicans are not going to have to lie about how little he’s done to help the poor and middle class.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s just a feeling you have. The average American is actually better off than ever.

The average American, no matter where they live, is dealing with a 30% to 50% cost of living increase over the last couple of years, when Biden’s been in office.

That’s going to be hard to sell in a reelection campaign.

FlashMobOfOne,

The US only cares about human rights and war crimes when they can be exploited to take over a nation’s resources.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, but siding with Israel here is the logical equivalent of siding with Andrew Jackson and supporting the Indian Removal Act as he committed genocide against the native people.

The power imbalance and how Israel has used it is what makes it imperative that Israel be held accountable by the international community.

Gaza: 3,195 children killed in three weeks surpasses annual number of children killed in conflict zones since 2019, Save the Children International says (web.archive.org)

Children make up more than 40% of the 7,703 people killed in Gaza, and more than a third of all fatalities across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel. With a further 1,000 children reported missing in Gaza assumed buried under the rubble, the death toll is likely much higher....

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s barbaric, but that’s what happens when a nation can commit ethnic cleansing with impunity.

It’s as simple as that.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s not grim at all.

It’s likely, given his history. At the same time, this is a silly argument. Even if he were still alive he wouldn’t care what either of us thinks, so let’s not waste any more of our breath on this.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Honestly a little surprised he lived so long. That dude liked to party.

You can always count on warmongers to talk big when they know with absolute certainty that they’re never going to be the ones in danger.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

We add a cool $5 billion to the Republicard every year on Israel’s behalf.

But the thing is… war is good business. I’d be surprised if there weren’t a legislator in Washington that hasn’t already made a stock move based on their classified briefings on this event.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

If anyone in Washington cared we wouldn’t spend a dollar on foreign war (as opposed to domestic defense) until domestic needs are 100% taken care of.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, that’s the same thing people say every time a war pops up. It was also the justification for the trillions we wasted in Afghanistan and Iraq.

    The use of the term ‘propaganda’ implies that the story here is untrue.

    However, Israel’s atrocities are exceedingly well-documented. That would make you a liar or willfully ignorant, either of which are intolerable.

    The fascinating thing about discussions of Israel and Palestine is that, no matter which side you’re on, the argument always boils down to: Their guy is just as bad as our guy.

    But, Hamas aside, I find Israel’s actions as a state indefensible. That’s what separates the two here. Israel is a state sponsor of apartheid, and while some members of the Palestinian population are indeed terrorists, that doesn’t justify perpetrating of an apartheid.

    FlashMobOfOne,
    @FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

    I’m sorry, but the state of Israel are the clear and objective overall aggressors in this situation.

    Exactly, and they are leveraging the power of the state to run an apartheid. That just can’t be ignored.
