I’ve noticed that Lemmy has been shedding a lot of the Reddit style toxicity that was brought here from the influx. Presumably that has something to do with the terminally on Reddit people leaving.

That’s always been his MO. He literally used to be a eugenicist (likely still is privately) until the backlash from that started threatening his career, and all of a sudden he flip flopped and started pretending that eugenics doesn’t even exist let alone him being a vocal part of it.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do.

Doing the absolute bare minimum to not be consumer hostile does not warrant praise. Just because Nintendo or Apple are worse doesn’t mean Valve is heroic for not doing things they really shouldn’t have the right to do anyway.

My city now mandates by law that we have to put recyclable materials in the recycling bin and compost in the green bin. You can and will get fined if you don’t and they do check, for households at least, because the vast majority of restaurants, offices, hell city-owned public places like parks, transit stations, libraries, etc do not have a green bin and many don’t even have a recycling bin. I’ve directly been told to just throw it in the trash. Biodegradable packaging is useless 99% of the time because there is no compost bin to put it in and they end up in the landfill anyway.

It’s what I like to call environmental theatre and pinning the burden of waste sorting entirely on the individual instead of seeing it as an infrastructure and access problem requiring government action. Not even a lot of action either, just buy some dollar store trash cans and put them in places since you already have a comprehensive city-wide recycling and compost collection program.

While Canada has no explicit exception to the minumum wage law, the minimum wage in Canada is still laughable and is absolutely not survivable for how expensive living here is.

Though the solution here is not tipping, which ignores every other customer service and “”“unskilled”“” labour worker that isn’t in food service. It should be raising the minimum wage to a post inflation value that reflects current costs of living, and committing to continuously updating it so it stays even with inflation and rising costs in general (not unheard of, some European countries for example use a formula to calculate every year’s minimum wage based on inflation and cost of living). Actually, we shouldn’t have a single national minimum wage but one depending on where you live so it reflects your actual survival expenses. Both Vancouver and Vanderhoof enjoy fast food and coffee shops but the employees in the former have a much harder time living in the city they work in than the latter despite doing the same work and making the same contribution to their fellow residents (or if nothing else, they do more work in a larger city with more people while not being able to afford the larger city).

And yeah, Subway’s been doing that for a while, at least in the part of Canada I am.

Video games could have had a single version for the entire world which contains every localization that the user can freely choose between (you know, like every other software with an international market), but Nintendo popularized the geolocking model that other competitors also started using. (And no it’s not because it would take too much space, that might have been true in the ROM cartridge days but now most game cards are just overpriced proprietary SD cards with hundreds of gigabytes of storage, and it’s not like game studios are particularly conservative with file sizes nowadays.)

Phones also could have had removable batteries and could be disassembled, but Apple popularized the throw it in a dumpster and get a new one model that other competitors also started using.

The tech industry is especially brazen because two thirds of the users literally value convenience and “polish” above data ownership and device repair rights and literally anything else and the other third is just ignored and everyone calls them stuck in the past, paranoid, amish, etc.

Also pets. Gifting someone a pet does neither the recipient nor the animals any favours unless you know for certain that they both want a pet (and that it’s an actual informed want with all the required forethought and self assessment for both the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet, and not just “a puppy running around my house would be so cute!”) and have the means to support a pet.

Especially if the recipient is a kid and/or you’re giving them a fish or rodent or some other small cheap animal that is considered low maintainance or disposable. News flash, no pet is low maintainance or disposable and you might as well just step on the animal instead to spare them the suffering because a dumb little kid will kill them slowly and horribly. I see this happen all the time and it pisses me off so much. Pets aren’t toys, they shouldn’t be given to children who can’t even take care of themselves.

Actually, please just stop giving people animals without their prior input in general. If you truly want to gift someone a pet, you should be involving them in the acquisition process, taking them to the shelter to choose a pet for example, because the personality of the individual animal and whether it’s suited to the personality of the people that will be caring for them is absolutely critical. If you can’t do that but still want to support their having a pet, then see if a shelter will sell a prepaid adoption certificate, that way they can still choose to not go through with it, or just buy them pet supplies if you know for sure that they plan on getting a pet. There are even species agnostic gifts if you don’t know what kind of pet they plan on getting.

It should also be noted that huge parts of the Church also rejected William Thomson’s age calculations for the Earth. Even though he massively underestimated its age, the Church asserted that the Earth was even younger.

Missing link fallacy. We have much, much more evidence for evolution than we do for creation, but because we don’t have all the evidence, you choose to reject all of it in favour of theories that have even less evidence behind them.

Yeah, because that device literally gives us access to all the information the entire human race has amassed. Not only that, but we also have our work and/or school tied into it, so for those things we literally need to be on it at least part of the time. Instead of hoarding expensive books that you’ve never read to justify having an oversized McMansion with a “library”, we access our information as needed.

I’m squarely gen-z and I did that all the time in the 2000s and 2010s. I was also lucky enough to grow up in a less car dependent city with good cycling infrastructure which helped a lot. Seeing how the incidence of pedestrian and cyclist deaths due to car collisions has steadily risen over these past decades (accounting for more deaths than from both drugs and thugs combined mind you), I’d also argue that kids don’t do that anymore because it’s now a lot less safe to exist outside if you’re not in a car. Not every problem can be blamed on that damn phone.

In the spirit of Alec’s pedentry, I must mention that lube does not work by making things moist, instead it works by reducing friction and preventing direct contact between solids. Oil based lubes are a prime example of this as they contain very little water and therefore is ineffective at making things moist but is still effective at reducing friction. Water by itself is actually a pretty bad lube.

Also we’re talking about machine lube right? …right?
