Getting really tired of this “the fediverse needs to cater to normie interests because we’re here now and it’s what we deserve” attitude. If you can’t find a community to click with, you can always create one, join one you don’t know much about with an open mind, or don’t use the fediverse if it doesn’t have the content you like. Sorry to say it but you’re not special and no existing users on any social media platform is obligated to go out of their way to make you feel comfortable on the platform.

Same with the “your open source, community developed platform/client sucks! I demand you make the UX better because I the user deserve better! No I’m not going to donate to your development fund because you suck and need to be better before you deserve my money!” sentiments that I see on Lemmy more and more now. Seems like everyone just expects corporate level user experience and customer service from people developing open source software mostly for free as passion projects. Even after the numerous corporate boondoggles that drove people to the fediverse in the first place people aren’t the slightest bit willing to change their paradigms regarding how social media should be run.

Technically, the CO2 animals exhale is carbon neutral because it’s from plants you eat (or your food eats). Unless you’re eating petroleum derived products of course.

I say technically because while the plants themselves are carbon neutral, modern food production and distribution, especially meat production, still has a large carbon footprint. So your breath is only truly carbon neutral if you foraged for food in the forest on foot.

Unless you live in an extremely remote place not served by roads. The arctic for example. It’s not technically commuting as in going to and from your 9 to 5, but plenty of small northern communities are still completely dependent on small gravel runways or even bushplanes for things like going to the doctor or dentist, or really anything they need to go to a city for, which is a lot of things.

I actually thought this was a similar situation, that they’re so out in the middle of nowhere flying is significantly more convenient than driving. But then I took a look at the map and realized that they’re not far from Chicago and are within easy driving distance from nearby smaller towns, which makes this way harder to justify though still mildly interesting.

The job in that case is property management, not being a landlord in and of itself. If you do upkeep yourself as in renting out a basement or a second property, you’re technically both a landlord and a property manager. Homeowners can have property managers as well, such as in a condo, in that case the property manager is hired by the owners council and paid for with condo fees.

The “professional” landlords, the type that are hated by far the most, hire dedicated property managers who do basically everything (up to and including approving new renters and evicting people in some cases) and basically the only thing the actual landlords personally do is hold the deed, which is why those businesses are called holding companies.

Also keep in mind that every Indigenous community has different views on colonialism and the land and sovereignty issue. Some really just want to be left alone on their historical territory, others actively want to work with non-Indigenous people living on and around their ancestral land, and everything in between with tons of nuance. There is no singular “Indigenous attitide” on this though there does tend to be similar schools of thought. The most important thing in decolonization is to listen to all of them and respect their wishes.

Fun fact: The tables can get turned on us too. Moose and elephants have both been documented stalking humans who angered them for days trying to ambush and kill them for example.

In fact, the saying goes that you only need to make a stalking carnivore think you’re too much trouble for the amount of nutrients you have to get away since they’re just hungry, but if you’re being stalked by a herbivore, that means they’re genuinely trying to kill you simply because they hate you.

Terminal has plenty of convenience benefits over GUI as well. For example you can queue up long-running commands to go one after the other, something I didn’t realise how useful it was until I was using Linux full time.

I use this one all the time for archiving stuff and moving it from my PC to my file server. Tar archive a folder, generate a checksum, move the new files over to the server, and then delete the original folder:

tar -cvf folder.tar folder && cat folder.tar | sha256sum > folder.tar.sha256 && mv folder.tar folder.tar.sha256 /path/to/remote/file/server/ && rm -rf folder

The && part stops execution if there is any error so the folder is only deleted once everything else is done without issues.

Can’t do that with a GUI. Just make sure to proofread before you press enter.

Unpopular opinion: I find simple tagging and non-obscene graffiti in general less offensive than the spam flyers and company logo/QR code stickers everyone sticks everywhere. At least where I live the latter is also way more common.
