I haven’t had any recent issue with those either. Just make sure both the nvidia driver and the kernel are from your distros repository, and you always update them both at the same time.
Google, Amazon and Facebook will never see another cent, ad-view or personalized data point from me.
So far, this has affected relatively little to be honest. The most impact was losing access to WhatsApp.
Luckily Xfce exists which gives you back all of the configurability of old Gnome.
Move those panels around, add as many as you like!
Me, I’ve just looked at screenshots of old gnome and can’t remember why I ever thought 2 panels visible at all times were a good idea.
I love current gnome, cause with a single extension I can hide literally all of it until I need to bring it up with the super-button. And then I have my favorite apps, open windows, workspaces, systray, clock and a search field all visible at once.
(only way to get rich is to work more hours than someone else)

I used Gnome for half an hour when I noticed I can three-finger-swipe left/right to switch workspaces and swipe up/down to open and close the overview. I’ll never use anything else on my laptop!
