I think the newer kernel should work after reinstallation.
If it doesn’t and you want to stay with the older one:
apt list --installed linux-image*
There should be a package with a specific version number in its name. For example, the standard kernel for Debian 11 is: linux-image-5.10.0-26-amd64
Uninstall the linux-image-… package you don’t want to keep.
Also uninstall linux-image-amd64 which is the meta-package that pulls in the newest kernel version. Without it, you won’t get new kernel versions in upgrades.

You’re missing the point, if you get a document from a MS Office user you can’t simply view it or print it and assume the result will be what the user intended it to be.
You’re missing the point. You can’t assume that even if both use MS Office, either. Cause one of the users could have changed a setting, or use Office Online, or Office for OSX, or an older version, all of which aren’t fully compatible.
MS breaks these things all the time between versions too, without even telling you they’ve updated your Office.
Again, if layout of your end product is important, don’t share .docx files.

It’s the job of the extension developers to update their extensions when there’s a new Gnome version.
And it’s the job of your distro’s maintainers to keep the versions of Gnome and the extensions in the repo compatible.
If you install Gnome from your distro’s repo and extensions from Gnome’s website, YOU take on this job.

I do. Gnome is a special case because it doesn’t give you a lot of options. It’s take it or leave it, and it doesn’t follow the traditional mouse-centric desktop workflow.
But in my opinion it’s absolutely perfect for a laptop where you use the keyboard and touchpad. With a few key combos and swipe gestures you can fly through the UI and it only ever shows you what’s relevant at the moment.
Technologically, it’s the best DE out there, no contest. (Maybe with the exception of touchscreen integration)
But some design decisions grind my gears so hard I can’t use it.
I get irrationally angry when I see the bouncing cursor animation, or look at a list of my programs and half the names start with “K”.
It feels too sluggish, overloaded and Windows-y in its default configuration and getting rid of everything that nags me takes too long, when Gnome comes out of the box looking simple and stylish.
