Hi! My less-than-10-year-old has their own iPad (registered under my apple id) and wants to be able to “text” with the rest of the family. Most of us are not Apple people though: Android phones, using some combo of SMS, Discord, and Signal. The little one doesn’t have a phone, so I think that prevents us from signing them...
oh this looks really interesting. Thanks! I’m seeing a lot of negative reviews, people saying the messages are sporadic and unreliable… Is this just a few squeaky wheels that leave reviews?
Right on, that would definitely be easiest because I use discord all the time. And yeah, this kid is all about the craft mining and blox ro-ing, often with a facetime in the background with their friend :) thanks for the vote!
I didn’t think of Slack, but that’d be nice… I already have it open all the time for work and a friend’s server. Kid probably needs an email address to sign up, but it’s about time to get one of those too… thanks!
ah I didn’t realize you could use a non-M$ acct. I have it on my phone already with my work account, but if I can have a second instance/profile open with my personal email… that could work. thanks!
interesting. thanks for the extra info! I’ll definitely check it out. I might go with Discord for the short term just because the rest of us are already on it, but if I want something more “texty” this is a high contender.
Ok, I took your advice, bit the bullet and created the child account. Much better! I now have “Ask to buy” set up, and screen time and all that good stuff. I should’ve done this earlier. thanks for that! Skype seems like a decent alternative too… I’ll definitely consider it (though the easy option right now is seeming like Discord, just because the rest of us are on it already). Thanks!
Yes! I’ve started using those already. Good stuff. Unfortunately the Content Restrictions seem to block Roblox completely, no matter how I configure it… so I’ll have to leave those off, but that’s probably ok. The iPad is mostly used supervised anyway. Thank you again!
For software devs, I haven’t found sector to chain you nearly as much as the stack. I’ve been in Microsoft since the beginning of my career (.NET and more recently with Angular) but I’ve switched sectors from publishing, to insurance, healthcare, supply chain, education… All of those were in .NET. It probably would’ve been harder to get a job in the same sector but a different stack (Java or whatever). So… I’m glad I didn’t start in COBOL is what I’m saying. :)
Last time, I used: “Anybody need anything while I’m out?” and that went over well. May not make it through this surgery on Friday, so I turn to Lemmy for top-notch suggestions for my potential last words!
I already use Firefox for browsing normally, but I have to test on a Chromium based browser too. One soft requirement is that it should be installable with Flatpak on Linux.
Yess! Came here to recommend Vivaldi too. I switched from Brave for same reason as OP, and looked at a few options… Vivaldi won. It’s been a couple months and I haven’t looked back.
What non-SMS non-Apple app can I use to "text" my younger kid on their iPad

For software devs, which job to pick
Will taking a job in one sector set my career path...
What's an amusing thing to say before going under general anesthesia?

I use Brave to test whether my websites work on Chromium browsers, but their scummy actions lately make me want to find a new Chromium browser to test with. What's the best Chromium based browser?

What's a secret that you're keeping from your partner/significant other that you're taking to the grave with you?
It doesn’t have to be anything bad btw
