Krudler, to asklemmy in Tech workers - what did your IT Security team do that made your life hell and had no practical benefit?

It seems that some people are having trouble following the conversation and a basic stream of topical logic.

The initial premise was that somebody could see your passwords by pwning your machine… And using that to… Turn on webcam so they could steal your password so they could… pwn your machine?

Lol

Krudler, to piracy in PSA To people watching YouTube with AdBlockers

It’s what I want.

I worked for years in tech, and adjacent to marketers and sales people.

I know from direct experience that people want relevant advertisements for things that will solve a problem in their lives.

Going back to my example, I would very much appreciate an advertisement for a cigar store that will either give me a discount, introduce a new product to me, or deliver my product on my schedule.

I also make and buy mechanical toys, and I’ve had an interest in them for decades. I would really appreciate an ad that highlights a new collection of mechanical puzzles.

But instead I get badgered by Google ads for things that are nuisances and of no relevance to my life.

Instead of sharpening service for the professional barber clippers I own, because Google knows I cut my own hair, I get advertisements for Manscaped.

I steadfastly maintain there is an opportunity to advertise to people in a helpful way, but Google doesn’t do it.

Krudler, to asklemmy in What software do you wish that existed?

Sadly, that description was motivated by a direct experience I had a few days ago with Google maps.

But I’ve definitely had that other experience as well, where the next leg of the trip is to go straight for 20 minutes, and Google Maps chimes-in every 30 seconds to remind me to stay straight.

The most recent meaningful upgrade I have seen in the software is that instead of deciding to either play each piece of audio through the phone speaker or the Bluetooth, quite at random, it will now play things through the Bluetooth. Livin’ in 2024.

Krudler, to asklemmy in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?

The reason I suggest diectly going to janitorial supply is because you get the off-label stuff which is basically all the same chemicals for a good discount.

It’s not “zep brand pro industrial floor cleaner super duper wizbang” or anything, it will come in a blank jug with mixing ratios and the WHMIS info printed on it. Brands are for the public, janitorial supply is for frugal quality.

Same thing with oven cleaner, it will just come in a can that says “concentrated oven cleaner”.

At most you might see something vague like “Bottled by XYZ Chem co, Montreal”. Because that’s all that happens with industrial soaps, degreasers, lubricants, etc - some factory buys a bunch of 240 gallon drums, and squirts them into smaller bottles.

If you must search online, use Zep but seriously it’s so much better just to go in person.

Would you just stop.

Krudler, to asklemmy in What's a button you hate tapping or clicking accidentally?

I’ve been thinking for like 10 years that phones should have calibration functions specifically for the keyboard.

I have big hands, I am talking about palm a basketball sized hands. This makes it nearly impossible for me to ever hit the letter I think I’m hitting. Surely there’s enough computing power available now to figure this out.

First thing I do with every new keyboard, at home or at work, is literally remove the CAPS LOCK key and throw it in the garbage.

Yes I know that there is software solutions, but it’s just easier this way, especially when I don’t necessarily have admin privileges
