ZorinOS. I tried to install it on my spouse’s computer with all modern, well-supported AMD hardware. Had nothing but problems, to the point that the computer was barely usable. WiFi broken, GUI was laggy, repositories were buggy. When I finally got the system somewhat stable, I didn’t like the interface at all. Styles were bland, icons dull, everything just seemed clunky and awkward.

For a distro advertised as a beginner-friendly and pay-for-polish system, I was very dissapointed.

Might have been a fluke, I don’t think my experience is standard for Zorin, but it was a really terrible first impression and I never suggest it to Linux-curious folks. Mint or Vanilla Fedora are my go-to for newbs.

Yeah, but what if you needed to haul a team of volunteers to do disaster relief with a 9,000 pound trailer filled with water and food and then use the empty bed to haul debris away while rescuing survivors from the flood waters?

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

I love my Steam Deck. The fact that Valve made it so easy to upgrade, mod, repair, and running a full Linux distro so I can install anything on it is just awesome.

I’ve convinced 2 friends so far to buy one, so Valve is getting hella value from me on that front lol.

It’s so nice that it just works with any controllers, any hardware, can be fully customized internally and externally.

I use it to watch TV and movies, stream my Jellyfin music, couch co-op, play my emulated GBA games, play FOSS games like Battle for Wesnoth and Super Tux Kart, and of course a bunch of my Steam games.

Only buy the Pixel if you are going to install GrapheneOS on it. GrapheneOS is de-googled and has no bloat pre-installed.

Nyfure is right. Wayland support is experimental but has been added to Rust Desk since earlier this year.

I haven’t tested it on Wayland myself, and remote login isn’t yet supported according to their GitHub documentation, but if you just need a reliable way to provide remote support to your fam, it’s a really solid option.

Wayland is quickly becoming the standard, and Rust Desk seems to be on that train which is good. I wouldn’t be surprised to see full Wayland support or close to it by the end of next year.

Also, I just use the .appimage file and it works fine for me. Just make sure to set it as executable with chmod +x or in the file permissions tab in your GUI.

I’ve been using Rust Desk for a few months now and it’s awesome. Works on Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.

It’s open source and super easy to setup and configure. For limited use cases, you can just use their freely provided servers, but you can also host your own server if you want.

I’ve been really impressed with the connection speeds and features, it has everything I need including end-to-end encryption for all network traffic, so your remote connection is at far less risk of getting snooped.

Out of your price range listed, but I’ll list it for others. Sennheiser Momentum 4. Bluetooth tested on four different Linux devices and all have worked perfectly so far.

Super comfortable, great quality. Headphones I plan on having for a decade or more, I would highly recommend them.

I’ve owned a Thinkpad A485 with touchscreen for years and had several Linux distros on it including Manjaro and Linux Mint which I am currently using.

Never had any issues, touchscreen always works out of the box without me having to do anything extra. In fact, with a few distros, I’ve had issues with certain wireless mice, but my touchscreen always has worked. So I’ve actually had slightly better luck with the laptop touchscreen than some external mice lol.

Now a qualifier: I rarely use the touchscreen, and when I do, it’s always just to click something or scroll on an article or file list. I don’t do any special gestures or fancy touch functions, so I can’t speak to support from that perspective.

Very true, it people’s experiences will vary. It is a tradeoff for what you are willing to put up with for the FOSS change in workflow.

I find that at work, I am often forced into and fully MS framework anyways. Not able to install any software I want, forced to use their garbage. It’s really frustrating, but such is the state of things at most workplaces.

OnlyOffice is designed from the ground up to be more compatible with MS document types.

I’ve been using it for about a year now and haven’t yet experienced any compatibility issues with MS office documents.

I would guess that business excel is going to be pretty basic. You’re going to learn how to create business reports like P&L statements, depreciation schedules, simple profit forecasts, and so forth. All of which should be totally possible in OnlyOffice, or LibreOffice for that matter.

Powerpoints and Word documents are even more basic and will be totally fine in OnlyOffice. I’m literally doing a presentation on cyber security for a multi-million dollar business in a few weeks that is done completely in OnlyOffice and with 100% open source software and assets, even the fonts.

If you must use MS Office for some reason, use a copy on your University’s computers.

Don’t fall for the propaganda, FOSS solutions like OnlyOffice and LibreOffice will work fine for 95% of people out there, probably more honestly. I used OpenOffice then LibreOffice all through late Highschool and my University studies, wrote scores of papers and a bunch of presentations, never once had any problems with features not being enough.

Back end is open but wall-mounted. If there is a way to mount the case forward a few inches so it leaves a gap in the back, that would be fine with me.

I haven’t found any brackets that seem to do that though.

Also an option I am considering. I prefer something a little more professional if possible, but not a bad option if I can’t get something else to work.
