Marketing Company Claims That It Actually Is Listening to Your Phone and Smart Speakers to Target Ads (www.404media.co)

A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a...

You are generalizing too much here. I know many who have tried out a product only after seeing its ad. Ads can give plenty of returns to brands. But targeted ads which even exploits our most intimate conversations are really bad news for our right to privacy.

Many people forgot, many others now think that he is the villain of the story just because he did what he had to do to save his life, a whole lot don't care because 'they have nothing to hide'. For what it's worth, people who actually care about their privacy is a very small minority in pretty much all countries.

I am not from the US, but what are the chances of choosing a better candidate during the nomination process?

If you were using Signal just for SMS, none of your messages were secure anyway since the SMS protocol itself is not–defeating the purpose of signal. And if you had already convinced people to install Signal by using SMS as a caveat, you can just continue contacting them through the app.

I was able to convince pretty much everyone who matter in my life to install Signal and they all love it because WhatsApp has become too cluttered and spammy.

You can customize the Firefox UI entirely by making modifications to userChrome.CSS.

And there are some really good addons for tab management in Firefox.

This is one of those incidents that is infuriating for the parents when it happens, but will then end up being a story that they cherish and keep telling everyone they can for a long time.

"Unless the house is on fire or you are hurt, do not interrupt me on the phone!"

Hi everyone, this is a small but hopefully enjoyable bit of MC from my childhood. Way back when, my Dad worked in IT and worked from home. This is back in the early days of telecommuting and so most of his day was spent on calls in between actual technical stuff. The internet was in its infancy, so if he was working he really...

Threads vs microblogs?

Does anyone have any advice on whether to use or when you're looking to say, start a discussion about a topic on ? Is there an etiquette for what option is best? Or do people just pick depending on their mood (having a Twitter vs a Reddit sort of a day)?

LollerCorleone,

@NudelnAlDente If you just want to put something out there, microblog is a good option. If you want a discussion, starting a thread is the better choice.

Instead of deleting your Reddit account, consider using chatgpt to make comments instead

And make sure not to click on any links. If enough people use chatgpt or other LLM's to generate comments that are wordy but clearly just filler, it'll give advertisers pause and tank the value of the site as training data. Reddit's response will probably be to start banning users it thinks are doing this but normal users will...

That is too much effort for a site I don't really care about.

Yes, that will show you all the communities/magazines that your instance has already discovered and have started federating with. But if it is a community that hasn't been discovered by your instance yet, you will need to search with the link for it to start federating. And once even a single user from an instance does that, the community will be visible to everyone else as well.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

You don't need to do that if that community is already federating with your instance. If its not, it might take a little while for the federation to actually start after you make the search (based on the server infrastructure of your instance and the remaining queue). Try searching again after a bit and it should be there. These quriks should be solved as instances become more stable, and Lemmy/kbin gets further developed.

Unless its something you are desperately trying to find, nothing disappears from the internet.
