MrsDoyle,

I’m thinking coin sorter. You start by sorting the smallest coins through the littlest holes, and work your way up.

I’m a knitter, and making gloves with it just doesn’t compute for me. It’s too clumsy, with too many extra steps. They’d be making gloves from fabric or leather.

MrsDoyle,

Thanks for the chickpea recipe! To add to your carrot tip: when I buy them I peel them straight away and store them in a sealed container in the fridge. They stay crispy and juicy that way.

MrsDoyle,

Car carrots! Genius.

MrsDoyle,

Not in the trash, but I regifted something a friend sent me the week before Christmas. Wrapped it in fresh paper and gave it to another friend on Christmas Eve. No-one need know…

MrsDoyle,

I actually knew someone who died of that parrot disease. Psittacosis? He caught it off a budgie.

Here it is: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psittacosis

MrsDoyle,

My dental hygienist told me not to rinse. “You’re paying for the fluoride, why wash it away?” Makes sense. The dentist told me not to use mouthwash, because it upsets the mouth’s natural pH.

My biggest find lately is silicon toothpick thingies - interdental brushes. They get to crevices floss can’t reach.

MrsDoyle,

Maybe try getting an adult size bed. Taking your shoes off might also help. Cool pyjamas though.

What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

The owner kind of makes a weak attempt to seem like they’re trying, but if I weren’t there, they wouldn’t intervene at all. I’m asking because I want to make sure that I don’t over react next time.

MrsDoyle,

My dog was a big tall greyhound, and one time he was humped by another dog - a tiny Yorkshire terrier. It was clinging to his hock (ankle) and banging away for dear life, while my dog ignored it. Its owner and I were both laughing too hard to do anything about it, it was a ludicrous sight.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

MrsDoyle,

It was a build-up of something or other (carbon?) on the microphone part of the caller’s handset. You could fix it by tapping the handset sharply on a hard surface. Source: I used to work in radio back in the 80s.

MrsDoyle,

It’s bloody delicious too.

(Just say batter, the word “pudding” will make their heads explode.)

MrsDoyle,

I’m trying both Outlook and Proton. I’ll probably go with Proton, but aaaaargh, the thought of all the tedious work involved… I’ve got better things to do!

MrsDoyle,

I stopped using Chrome a while back, but still use Gmail because I’m lazy. Every time I crank open Gmail in another browser, Google whines at me to use Chrome. That grizzling pop-up is now the main reason I don’t use Chrome, and it will eventually drive me to migrate away from Gmail. DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

MrsDoyle,

My bad knee is now titanium and my good knee has become my bad knee.

MrsDoyle,

Two things helped me: learning not to listen to the “noise” (it’s not truly noise, it’s a kind of nerve damage), and hearing aids. When I first put the aids in the tinnitus vanished. The downside is that all the work I’d put in to not listening was overturned, because I “heard” the sounds again when I took the aids out. Still nice to have that respite though.

Training yourself to not listen to the racket isn’t easy, but it is so worthwhile. Turn your attention away to something else - a smell, a photograph, your pet, anything. Focus away. Just thinking about tinnitus is making it “audible” to me, lol! It’s not real sounds, it’s your poor abused nerve endings firing off random signals. White noise works for a lot of people, but it never has for me.

Visit tinnitus.org for more info. There’s a download section where you can get a pdf of a scientific paper describing the method.

Banks in Hong Kong can print their own money. There are 8 different designs in circulation. (lemmy.world)

Before someone asks why there isn’t insane inflation from banks printing an infinite amount of money for themselves, the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar. In order to be allowed to print HKD, banks must have an equivalent amount of USD on deposit.

MrsDoyle,

My favourite is the Royal Bank fiver with mackerel on one side and Nan Shepherd on the other. Apparently there are clouds of midges that only show under UV light, but I’ve never had a UV light and and an RBS fiver at the same time to check.

MrsDoyle,

I was adopted by a stray kitten and had her spayed when she was old enough. A friend told me I had taken away her “choice” to reproduce. I asked her how many of my cat’s hypothetical offspring she was willing to adopt - there would be I guess an annual litter of four or more to choose from. Yeah no.

In the end I moved countries and gave the cat away. I would never have another one, nice as she was. There’s a family of voles living in my garden, half a dozen frogs in the pond and lots of birds visit my trees. I support them mainly by leaving them to go about their business.

MrsDoyle,

He’s the reason I left the Co-op Bank - he was chairman. I figured if they had a loon like that at the top they couldn’t be trusted with my money.

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...

MrsDoyle,

I don't mind discussing stuff with people who have different views from me, but on Reddit I would mostly type out a comment, imagine what kind of rude retort I'd get, and trash the draft. I remember some years back having a great back and forth with someone on nuclear power and actually changing my mind! But more recently it's just "you're wrong and dumb", no discussion. Ugh.

I'm still very new here, but it feels like Reddit used to, and I like it.

MrsDoyle,

Hi! I'm 70, so retired and have many hobbies and interests. At the moment it's beekeeping and coastal rowing that take up most of my time. I took up rowing after arthritis put paid to dinghy sailing, and it's fantastic. I gave up racing this year but I sort of miss it. I keep bees with a community group, we have 15 hives on two sites. I'm also into photography, hill-walking, knitting, travel, gardening, all the old-lady stuff. And I enjoy tinkering with tech, I run a club website and a blog for a friend. What else? Baking, jam-making, DIY... I'm sure there's something I've missed. Oh, I made a pond and some frogs moved in, so I guess frog-watching? Is that a thing?

I always had penpals when I was a kid. My mother had one when she was a girl too, and finally got to meet her when they were in their 60s.
