I like this one. I’ve been hoping for some host-your -own AI models that I can dump into a system with a bucket of TPUs and a decent GPU for processing and get my own version of something like chat GPT at home then train it on the entire collective works of documentation and help articles about the software I usually do support for so it can act as a defacto repository of “natural language” chat/search for troubleshooting.
Work is what keeps me away from Linux. That and games. I know things have gotten a lot better for gaming on Linux and that’s great, it’s still limiting, quite bluntly. The games I want to play are not all available on Linux, and some have been more or less abandoned, so they may never work on Linux properly.
Work is the worst offender, since a lot of “business productivity” software seems to require Windows, since nobody in business runs anything other than Windows… Except if you’re running web services, then it’s usually Linux… Almost every app has a “cloud” component now that relies on something running Linux… But you can’t get the client software for Linux because fffffffuuuuuuuuuuu
I just want good, cheap, and mass production ready solid state batteries of any sort. Right now, anything that’s on the market either isn’t good or isn’t cheap, and none of it is mass produced… Often all three.
If we get over the hurdle of something we can mass produce for cheap that’s as good as, or better than the existing lithium tech that we have, I’m in.
I don’t mind too much when it comes to news, or other articles… Even pictures and memes… Whatever.
The one that confuses the shit out of me is stuff that’s supposed to be interactive, like AMA or AITA or something. OP will never see the replies, so… Why?
Something like the news can have very different discussions depending on who is in the community/subreddit where it was posted, meanwhile, posts asking for help or something… The entire point is to give OP a solution/answer to their inquiry. Why make a bot to bring that question to Lemmy when OP won’t be aware it happened, and will have no way to know that responses have been given here? It’s dumb.
There’s still a lot of things that are being posted both to Reddit and Lemmy, and having that done by a bot instead of a person… Well, I’m not mad at it. It’s coming here one way or another.
He had fallen in with some questionable types throughout his life, partly due to his work. I won’t get into many details here, I don’t want it to be traced back to his family or anything; but due to the circumstances he found himself in, bluntly, he was worth more dead, than alive. He would only be worth anything if he died “naturally” or something, since life insurance is kind of a stickler for that sort of thing.
All I was told was that he had made arrangements for his body to be found, and around what was going to be done afterwards to ensure that insurance paid out so his family would be taken care of.
The circumstances were kinda BS too, it wasn’t his fault, but he was liable and there was little he could do to change that. He knew what the outcomes were and to him, death was the better option. I’m not saying I agree with his choices. I had no real part in them, I was too young at the time to really grasp what was happening, and appropriately, I was not aware of, nor involved in any of it, and heard most of what I know through my older siblings and from my father (his brother). He apparently sent my dad a note the night before he was found dead basically summarizing what was about to happen, so it was very clearly planned. As far as I’m aware, everything went according to plan and though I don’t have much contact with that part of my family, I believe they’re doing just fine.
Just a touch more detail on the circumstances, it was some legal issue he found himself kind of “holding the bag” for (so to speak) so his outcomes were: (extremely unlikely) he would be found innocent, and allowed to return to his “normal” life - obviously he didn’t think this was possible at all. (most likely) he would be found guilty and sentenced to many years in prison. Being a convict would ruin his chosen vocation as there’s a lot of trust required in what he does and a conviction would basically exclude him from working in his field. (alternatively) he dies, insurance pays out, his family gets a big wad of cash, and he would be just as useless as if he was found guilty; but now with a pretty significant amount of money given to his family.
I don’t hold it against him. I don’t have any strong feelings on the matter. It’s just something that happened.
For those that are genuinely confused, there’s two very important things you must know. The coroner is the job title for the guy who writes up what caused you to die. They do things like autopsies (when required), and they’re basically a doctor for dead people.
The other thing is the English idiom of “paying [someone] off”, which is basically a common way to not so subtley say that you’re bribing them.
So in plain language: there is an extremely good chance that my uncle bribed the coroner to ignore whatever he found on my uncle when he died and say he perished from natural causes. This normally implies something about self deletion and insurance, since insurance basically never pays out if you die by your own hands.
Is anyone still confused? Please let me know if you are and I can address any part of this that might not be crystal clear.
I’m just going to come out and say it. Have your Christmas. Nobody else gives a shit about you or what you believe. So celebrate, enjoy. Nobody cares if you do. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone about it, and we wouldn’t notice if you tried.
So Merry Christmas, happy Festivus, happy holidays, happy Hanukkah… Whatever you celebrate at this time of year, I hope it’s a positive experience and that you and your loved ones enter into the new year as happy and as healthy as they can be.
But don’t mistake that sentiment for giving any shits about what you do to celebrate.
I couldn’t convince my parents to buy me one when I was younger.
Now I’m an adult and the Mrs. Won’t let me buy one either
EDIT: it’s a joke people. I just don’t have a TV that will connect to one and I have way more pressing money matters on my hands than buying very old consoles and trying to make them work. Seriously though, it looked wicked when it came out, well ahead of its time, then seemed to die off despite being (at least on paper) one of the best consoles available. RIP Sega consoles.
