PonyOfWar, (edited ) to asklemmy in Why in the year 2024 and with all the knowledge humans have now do people still believe in religion?

Because religion provides comfort, community and a meaning to people’s existence that goes beyond “we were born of chance on an insignificant rock somewhere in the universe”.

(I’m not religious BTW)

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in Am I the only one getting agitated by the word AI?

The word “AI” has been used for way longer than the current LLM trend, even for fairly trivial things like enemy AI in video games. How would you even define a computer “thinking on its own”?

PonyOfWar, (edited ) to asklemmy in Does France have a terrorism problem?

France certainly has a social problem, with immigrant-descended populations often living precariously in crime-ridden banlieues, relatively isolated from the “indigenous” French people. These are great conditions to breed extremism.

But I’m not sure you could go so far as to say that there’s really a terrorism problem. Of course any terrorist attack will be a huge thing in the news, but looking at the bigger picture, it still happens rather rarely and France is overall a pretty safe country.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

Never would have called him a favorite of mine exactly, but a channel I used to watch was Shadiversity. Had some interesting videos on medieval life and castles. These days he seemingly only does “let’s test this wacky weapon” videos and has a terrible second channel where he whines about “woke culture”.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

HP Lovecraft - great writer, horrible racist

Similarly, Orson Scott Card - Ender’s game and its sequel are great, but he’s a raging homophobe.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in What do you want for Christmas?

I’ve kind of stopped caring about the gift-receiving aspect of christmas in recent years. So I mainly look forward to the family Raclette dinner on christmas eve and meeting some old friends who come home for christmas.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Many of them, but one show that people sometimes nag me about is “Friends”. Not going to watch it either, doesn’t seem even remotely worth my time.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in Would reverting back to tribes or city-states not be sufficient to save us from ourselves?

I have a hard time picturing how a “return to nomadic tribes” would even work. How would you turn a densely populated country like, say, the Netherlands, into nomadic tribes? The planet could never sustain 8 billion people living as nomads. Not to mention, it wouldn’t stop war or conquest in any way. See the Mongols, Scythians etc.

Areas with lots of city states have historically been hotbeds of war and chaos. Ancient Greece or the HRE constantly had tiny states squabbling. It would also make large infrastructure projects much harder. Building a highspeed railway line through Europe is hard enough right now, imagine the same thing but instead of 5 countries, it goes through 50. It would also be a mess to get any unified environmental policies through.

So no, I don’t think either option is realistic or desirable.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in What MMOs are you all playing?

The ones I’ve been playing on and off over the past few years are Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings Online.

GW2 is a really nice game to just pick up and play without needing huge time investments. It has a fun gameplay loop and well designed zones to explore. Haven’t gotten around to playing the new expansion yet, but I hear it’s pretty good.

LOTRO is great for that traditional MMO experience. The community is very friendly and surprisingly active. It has a nice atmosphere. They are also frequently giving away the expansion packs, so you get a lot of content for free.

PonyOfWar, (edited ) to asklemmy in Why a user in one instance can't comment on another instance in lemmy? ( not a rant )

You can already do that. That’s one of the basic features of Lemmy. For example, my account is not from lemmy.world, but I can comment here. Looking on your profile, you’ve also already commented on lemmy.ml posts.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in whats going on with the 'tankie' thing

The problem with Tankies is their authoritarianism and their “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” mentality. I could never support a movement that supports horrid dictatorships of any kind. Even as a socialist, I’d always defend a capitalist democracy against a communist dictatorship. If NATO defends a small democratic country against an invasion from its large and powerful neighbor, I’m all for it, even if I’d rather have a European military alliance instead of NATO.

It’s also absurd how they defend countries like China, which has perhaps one of the worst forms of capitalism, because they’re nominally communist.

PonyOfWar, (edited ) to asklemmy in What’s your favorite fantasy universe and why?

Boring answer, but probably Middle-earth/Arda. Just such a well-crafted world with deep and interesting lore.

Runner up would be Bas-Lag from China Miéville’s books. Very unique, somewhat Lovecraftian steampunk world with many weird inhabitants.

PonyOfWar, to movies in Lift by Netflix is incredibly bad wow

Is this the first AI generated movie or something?

I mean, we already have “Wish”…

PonyOfWar, to fuck_cars in What modes of transport do you really like?

Bikes. I enjoy being outside instead of being in a box. I can also usually take more scenic and pleasant routes than I could with public transport or a car.

Second place would be high-speed rail. It’s quite comfortable and you can read a book or just watch the landscapes go by at rapid speeds.

PonyOfWar, to asklemmy in Who agrees this was the best one?

HeartGold and SoulSilver improved upon gen 2 in almost every way while staying faithful to the originals. For me those are the perfect Pokemon games.
