Interesting to read those linked GNOME issue threads, they’re really living up to their reputation… Looks like KDE is becoming the premier gaming DE, and I’m pretty happy with that.

Interesting aside for anyone interested; you can subscribe to her Peertube account with your Lemmy account by searching !veronicaexplains in your instance’s search bar (or clicking that link). Then any video she uploads in the future will show up in your lemmy feed, and any comments you leave on lemmy should show up on the peertube video! :D

I’m not sure if the lemmy page will fill out with her previous uploads, I can only see the one about SSH on my feed too. She seems to upload fairly regularly, and this latest video about Linux Mint was uploaded 20 hours ago. I suspect if you’re the first person to subscribe on your instance, only future videos will show up on it, but I’m not entirely sure.

It’s basically an extra layer of polish to make Debian as user-friendly as can be, which while being very pleasant to work with for experienced users, is likely to be particularly appreciated by those who are not particularly technically inclined. As an example, the Mint Software Store is pretty much unmatched as a stable, and extremely user friendly way to manage and install software, with reviews, Flathub integration, screenshots, etc. Where as on standard Debian, the GUI package manager would likely be Aptitude, which is quite a daunting piece of software for the uninitiated.

You could make a vanilla Debian install as user friendly as Mint, but you’d already have to have the skill to get it to that state, where as Mint is ready out of the box.

Personally I use a Kobo Libra, as it supports sideloading books manually, supports various formats (epub, pdf, etc), has a nice backlit e-ink display, and physical buttons for page turns in addition to the touch screen.

Also doesn’t support Amazon, which is always a plus. Nice bit of kit.

web/low memory alternatives to Krita and GIMP please

recently I bought a Chromebook, I love it so much, it has Linux container enabled and I downloaded Firefox, GIMP, and Krita, but my Chromebook is only 64GB, so that can be a lot!!! So what web apps or low storage alternatives can I use?? I know Photopea, but what about drawing? Thank you!!

KDE’s MS paint alternative is actually pretty decent, I believe it’s called Kolourpaint.

I’m also aware of Pinta.

It’s not a webapp, I recommended them since you mentioned you wanted low storage alternatives in addition to webapps.

Love the idea of this. I believe slowly building up these alternative, open-source and decentralized platforms will be pay off long term as the centralized platforms bloat and die via enshittification.

Mastodon will hopefully naturally grow as twitter continues to destroy itself. Lemmy might be a bit harder get people to stick with.

If they can find an instance that really fits them, or most of their communities are here, then it should be an easy transition. But if they’re missing their favorites, it’ll be tough to get them to stick with it.

I don’t think stallman would say videogames being proprietary is evil, I believe he made an exception for art.

And bear in mind, every vintage console emulator to play those games are open source.

I was afraid to say it in case you liked him but YES. When I first got into Linux I subscribed to his standalone show on youtube, but he was so god damned long winded, I can’t tolerate any of his content now, especially since he got ‘weird’

Oh, damn. Thanks for finding that man. Now I’m not sure where I read his stance on closed-source art. I might be mixing that up with Torvalds stance in tivoization, but I’m not sure. It might’ve been the Lunduke interview Wzstolzing mentioned.

Very few games would qualify for that, unfortunately. One of the few that comes to mind would be when iD released the source code to Doom 1, 2, and 3 under GPL, but with the assets still under copyright.
