You say that like Gale actively planned to try and kill Mystra. He was trying to give her back a piece of something that he thought was part of her. Meanwhile she was such a fool she couldn’t see that this mortal was pining to do something for her. Instead of saying it was dangerous she just kept saying “Nah babe, I don’t need anything, I’m good.”

So I’m not sure saying “Here. Kill yourself.” REMOTELY fits the ‘crime’ of making a mistake in trying to display admiration for your aloof idiot girlfriend who is supposedly a God but too blind to see what is right in front of her.

I guess but I genuinely don’t get why people are bothered by others not using it. The tech was made insanely classified and the only two people who ever conceived of the idea are dead. Mentioning of the spore drive was made essentially punishable by death and it was left forgotten to history. Stamets and Straal were never working on it as a propulsion method. They were working on it as an idea in general. Starfleet was the ones that co-opted their really niche research and then classified it to the highest level because they were desperate. The Klingons and the Romulans weren’t ever at that state of desperation like the Federation was and if there’s one thing that we’ve seen throughout Trek is that humans excell at pulling things out of their ass when times are beyond perilous. That’s our gimmick. Not to mention that the Romulans and Klingons have cloaking tech. We don’t. Not like we didn’t try. Why can’t we have tech that they don’t have?

I realize it would create continuity problems, especially with Pike, but it wouldn’t kill me if they decided by the end of the show that it took place in an alternate universe like the Kelvin movies did.

Note for below that I’m not projecting any of this onto you. After writing it it does feel kinda angry. The tone should be read with casual conversation, no hostility pointed towards you or your idea. Just my personal opinion on it. Sorry if it comes off abrasive because that is not the way I mean it.

I get where you’re coming from but I can’t think of a bigger insult than if CBS/Paramount were to do this. One of the loudest things from people who hate the show are those screaming that Discovery isn’t in the Prime Timeline. Started with Season 1 with people arguing that ‘CBS doesn’t own the rights to the prime timeline’ which was the dumbest fucking concept ever devised but ran like wildfire. That whole “It isn’t prime” thing still sticks. You see it from people who hate the show even here on Lemmy who refuse to believe that it’s canon and act like it isn’t. If they suddenly ended the show with something that says it isn’t the prime timeline then ignoring the issues it makes for SNW/Lower Decks, they would literally be giving the rage baiting assholes everything they’ve ever wanted. They would bend over and say “Fine. You were right. It isn’t canon.” It would invalidate everything that came before it and make all the fans of the show like myself who’ve defended it feel like utter fools. Honestly if they ever did it? I would abandon Star Trek in its entirety. Would sell off my models, get rid of the flag, and eradicate Trek from my life. It would feel like a slap in the face to the fans to say “Hey, the trolls were right.”

.ml’s meme community is also heavily sanitized over there by the mods and admins. Both myself and another popular poster have had posts removed from there for reasons that didn’t make a whole lot of sense and when asked for clarification we were given hans waving. This happened repeatedly enough that we both stopped posting there because we genuinely couldn’t keep track of extremely vague rules that were applied in consistently.

Us mods here are far lighter on moderation. Just make sure it’s a meme, you’re not hurting someone else or being a dick to them, and that its not political.

I haven’t watched Star Trek since DS9 and refuse to watch anything made after Enterprise.

Can someone please elaborate what in heavens name is going on this meme is talking about?

In Voyager there was a two parter episode that involved another Starfleet ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant. They were capturing extra-dimensional beings and using their corpses to power their starship so they could get home faster.

In Discovery, the ship uses a unique propulsion method that utilizes spores and fungal properties.

The meme is mocking people who say that travel via mushrooms is stupid while having no issue with the usage of alien ghost corpses to power their ship.

Complete and utter nonsense that is an outright fabrication. What you’re describing does not exist in Discovery. You’re collapsing 3-4 different things into one while misunderstanding every single one of them.

No they’re not. Nothing in Discovery is omnipresent. The closest thing is Carl which that can be argued.

I misread this as omniscient. The Network is slightly omnipresent but it’s not sentient and makes no decision. It’s merely a root system/highway. It also doesn’t exist in ALL places. It only exists where life exists. The network does not have root structures in intergalactic space, as an example.

That’s accurate. The Mycelial Network (the fungal root structure that permeates an extra layer of space, similar to subspace and transwarp) does connect all of time and space.

No one has super special powers. The closest is Stamets but that’s because of genetic engineering. DNA from a unique species of tardigrade was taken and incorporated into Stamets’ own DNA. Now he has the ability to see time a little differently due to that DNA and he has the ability to navigate the Mycelial Network. End of ‘special super powers’.

From what I can tell, you took the Mycelial Network, the Tardigrade, Stamets Ability, and the jahSepp (which are a sentient race of fungus that live within the mycelial network and breakdown organic material the same way that fungus does on Earth) and then collapsed them into all one giant mess.

That’s not the force and it’s nowhere even close to it.

causality

Not sure you’re using this correctly here as the spore drive doesn’t break the link between cause and effect either.

But it doesn’t. That’s the thing. Warp Drive might (but only when utilized in specific fashion, it doesn’t violate causality simply by existing) but the Spore Drive never has. The temporal shenanigans that happened with the Discovery wasn’t caused by the spore drive. It was caused by a time crystal/Red Angel suit.

Causality is things affecting other things. One event happens which triggers another and there is an outcome. That can continue on indefinitely, but causality is the inherent link between cause and effect. To break causality is to have an outcome that occurs before the event. At no point does the spore drive in Discovery do this. There’s no causality paradox or anything similar that happens in Discovery that is caused by that Spore Drive. The closest is when Disco travels forward in time by a couple of months in Season 1. The warp drive only breaks that as well when you start introducing time travel into it, using that warp drive to specifically cause temporal fuckery.

The Galactica take got me rolling for some reason.

Babylon 5 and Galactica are the ones people have pushed me the hardest to watch. I’ve been meaning to but haven’t gotten around to it. Babylon 5 probably pushed harder on me because I don’t like DS9 and everyone keeps saying that B5 is DS9 but better. Just keep rewatching the same few things over and over again. Eventually I’ll get to it and hate myself for not having started it sooner.

Oh I’m aware of Teal’c. The show was constantly on TV and my parents liked it but I never watched it. So I’m familiar with the premise and most general characters but I never got into it personally. Teal’c I ended up becoming even more familiar with when I was doing research thanks to God of War. God can that man act…

Hilariously I wasn’t actually being gay in this moment, although you are totally right to immediately go with that line of thinking for ‘in my tastes’ lol. This might sound hypocritical considering my love for Discovery, but Stargate SG-1 seems to be more action focused than Atlantis. I could be completely wrong but that’s just my impression from seeing it casually on TV every now and again. DSC has a bunch of action but it’s also pretty heavily peppered with a lot of really great dialogue and character development so the action feels ‘earned’ to me. Not just throwing it around just for the sake of it. I could be wrong but SG-1 (and again this is totally from the outside looking in with no real information/watching history) feels like it just has a lot of action. I mean that’s probably due to the fact that they’re going through gates to random worlds.

Atlantis seemed more researchy and talky, like TNG or VOY, which I gravitated a little bit more towards. But again I only ever saw sporadic episodes and have no idea what the hell was going on beyond the fact that they found old shit underwater and there was a cute dude in glasses.

Okay I lied a little. I saw two Stargate movies and I’ve seen a handful of Atlantis episodes. Stargate proper looks okay but not as in line with my tastes as Atlantis seems to be. Also cute dude with glasses on Atlantis. That helps. Then again SG1 has that silver fox so who knows…

My issue with the show extends throughout all seasons, unfortunately. There’s a few reasons as to why I am not interested but they’re all personal opinion. No serious complaints about the shows quality overall.

Nah. I can’t watch alternate period pieces like that, Man in the High Castle and even Inglorious Bastards. My brain cannot cope with history being different for some reason and I start getting really uncomfortable and stressed out/anxious. The sensory issues that I’ve gotten from my autism are the dumbest things possible.

However I haven’t seen the final season of the Expanse. So considering starting that up again… That being said I also have never seen Stargate, Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica. So not like I have a shortage of sci-fi at the moment.

COVID fucked over so much. I dunno how much of a surprise this is but I liked Supernatural and the ending that they went with was garbage. Although the producers have said that COVID didn’t impact the ending that heavily. I hope to fuck they’re lying because if that was a conscious decision then fuck 'em all.

For the record it wasn’t going to stop me from giving it a go, just that’s why I never tried it. Didn’t realize that’s why but it was hard to articulate. If there’s some self realization in there then I’m all for it.

It’s on the list either way. When will I get to it? No clue. Probably within the next couple months. Stargate is the one with the silver fox looking dude, right?

Okay I was actually talking with my roommate a few minutes ago, while you made this comment, and we were talking about Stargate. We’re both huge Trek fans and she has seen all of Stargate. While talking to her I realized why I felt put off by SG-1 and you touched on it.

Every part of Stargate SG-1 that I’ve seen feels like it’s Team America: Space Police. As a Canadian, I really fuckin hate that. So if you’re saying that’s less common then I might give it a chance. I really really despise the concept of a bunch of militarized people rocking up somewhere and suddenly and aggressively imposing their will upon the local population. Which, as I found out when talking to roommate, is sort of the concept of the first Stargate movie? Going in to kill Egyptian-esque gods that have enslaved the locals of another location?
