I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

Trainguyrom,

To build off of the above poster, some things sometimes take some tweaking to make work. When you distro hop you’re really just hopping to a different set of defaults and maybe a few relevant library differences. Learning what to do and how to do it can be daunting but when you get it its brilliant and then you have some idea what you need to do the next time you encounter a similar issue

Hey look, ageism! Remember the participants in the flower power/hippy movements would be in their 80s right about now, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say most of them probably didn’t completely flip 180⁰ on their beliefs and become gun toting MAGA voters.

In other words, not old people fit your description

Trainguyrom,

I learned 3 things very quickly in one evening:

  1. My cheap electric razor throws a ton of noise onto whatever electrical circuit it’s plugged into
  2. How to sort out ZFS filesystem errors
  3. That the bathroom socket I plug my razor into and the plug across the house that the main desktop is plugged into happen to be on the same electrical circuit

So that’s fun!

Trainguyrom,

So I’m going to go against the grain here and say to get some college under your belt. A 2 year degree and a cert or two (which can even be part of your degree program, or sometimes will allow you to skip some classes saving you time and money) will easily get you into a helpdesk job, and from there you can go into whatever specialization ends up tickling your fancy.

I’ll also say, helping someone with their nth password reset doesn’t have to suck. Sometimes there’s a root cause that you can help with which makes you far more helpful than the tech who just helps them reset it 10 more times. One of my proudest achievements in a previous role was successfully teaching all of our users who’d email us a scan of a printout of a screenshot of an error message how to send us the screenshot directly, and we went from 1 ticket like that per week to none for my final 6 months. All it takes is some compassion and meeting the users where they are without judgment for the common goal of getting both of our jobs done a little easier.

Trainguyrom,

What gets me is the people that don’t know their own passwords, don’t know how/where to look them up, and don’t even understand how to reset their passwords

I worked support for a phone manufacturer for a while and helped a lot of poor lost souls struggle to get back into their Google accounts on their new and replacement devices. I got a lot of them in, but some may have never gotten out of authentication hell

Trainguyrom,

My favorite are the services that keep rejecting the randomized passwords so I have to manually think of a password. I ain’t creative enough on the spot for that! Just accept my /dev/urandom output dammit!

Trainguyrom,

Ah so a very different point in your career than most of us seem to have thought. Probably your best bet is to get an easy cert that shows basic PC knowledge and/or start throwing applications out in all directions. If you can get 6-12 months on your resume at a slog of a callcenter or other shitty entry level support role that should be enough to kickstart you into an IT career if that’s the direction you want to go. Get onto a corporate helpdesk and use that time to figure out what you need to learn and go from there.

Trainguyrom,

As someone who commuted an hour each way for a year, I both calculated to the best of my ability and then tested. I could shave 5 minutes off by going 65 instead of 55 on the 55 mph highways, and fuel consumption was significantly higher. Going 30 in a 20 zone will do jack shit for someone commuting on surface streets

Trainguyrom,

It seems to finally be consistently below freezing in southern Wisconsin. We had some snow in November that made me hopeful but yet another year with little snow until the new year

Trainguyrom,

It takes only an extra minute or so to get from this point of scraped off to a safe amount of the windshield scraped off. And honestly the couple of times I was lazy about it I ended up saving no time because I spent longer at stops plus was late anyways.

Trainguyrom,

I mean it’s a locked down gento system that now allows you to install popular open source software, and it’s linux-y enough to get businesses to be less linux-hostile in their software and webapps

Trainguyrom,

I’ve found Mint seems to have the best default Workspace config so i use it far more on Cinnamon than I do any other DE

PC died. Trying the legal options.

And fuck. I really miss plex. I’ve had Netflix and Hulu forever as family won’t let me cancel. Decided to sign up to Paramount + for some Trek. Twice in lower decks it didn’t save my watched episodes. Doesn’t mark episode as watched if you exit during the credits. And multiple playback issues....

Trainguyrom,

Bruh I’ve always been a goodie 2shoes and gone legit, but the current streaming wars have pushed me over the edge and I’ve been shocked at how easy it is to just do a quick search on qbittorrent and yoink down some content

Trainguyrom,

I’m completely disconnected from what new movies and TV shows come out after years of blocking all ads. I can see wanting to change but ads have only gotten more annoying so I have no desire to change yet

Trainguyrom,

The fun part is that not only do you skip the line with Genie Plus but also the folks letting people into the ride will legit let an entire stream of Genie Plus payers in before letting someone who waited in line go. With the old fast pass system they were really good about alternating lines if there was a line for both fast pass and genie plus

Trainguyrom,

Christmas with my family we had a hard discussion about what kind of end of life care my grandparents need and how to get that setup. Then during Christmas with my wife’s family my brother in law who’s 40 and now responsible for 3 kids between himself and his ex-wife/girlfriend drank until he passed out on the floor of the garage. His oldest child was clearly disturbed by seeing him that way, but most of my wife’s family defended it because “when you’re surrounded by family is the best time to drink like that because you know you’re safe!”

On the upside, my family was surprisingly well-behaved for once, and never chewed out my kids for being too noisy even when they were visibly struggling as they played with the new musical toys

Trainguyrom,

Java is famously cross-platform. It even means you can run a Minecraft server on Arm64 without issue. I currently have a heavily modded Minecraft server hosted on an Ampere Alta VPS without a single hitch

Trainguyrom,

My understanding is that if electrical demand starts outstripping supply the sinewave can start getting badly mishapen.

From watching videos about synthesizers and playing with VCV Rack I’ve learned far more about waveforms than I ever did from any electrical education or research

I’ve kind of come full circle on all this to where I no longer care.

I’m at a similar point. I saw how people who don’t think about privacy handle the world and realized its not so bad.

In the end its all datamining for targeted ads, which only works if I can see the ads they’re trying to target me with.

It also helped that I had a job directly working with the kind of data I worked so hard to block and saw both how unreliable the data was, and how much companies struggle to actually put that data to use

Trainguyrom,

The money I work for has value because its almost entirely held in banks insured by the United States Federal Reserve and those dollars are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. If that money becomes valueless overnight the whole world is in for a very rough time, and I definitely won’t be alone in my plight. You can’t say any of that about cryptocurrencies

Trainguyrom,

If all of the defaults occurred >7 years ago and there’s been no credit activity since the individual would have no credit score because of no credit history. I know this because I’ve literally seen it happen. What you do then is apply for a secured credit card (basically you pony up some cash to secure an extremely low credit limit) then after you’ve established a payment history and a credit score you can move on from there. As far as I know financial institutions do not take into account one’s felon status when determining elgibility

Trainguyrom,
Trainguyrom,

The other possibility of course is the developers themselves seeded keys to display this notice to pirates who might not otherwise purchase the software legitimately. There’s plenty of well-known cases where a developer has released pirated copies/keys into the wild.

Trainguyrom,
