Truck_kun, to memes in I'm so good at time management that I hardly work at all

Until recent times, I’ve always thought a govt job was a good thing to have.

Still is, but the constant threat of government shutdowns, in the US at least, as of late, make me feel you need to live below your means and keep a decent chunk of 3 to 6 months pay, because you could suddenly be without pay for a good chunk of time because some idiots think they score political points, or will get their way, by hurting citizens.

This of course refers mostly to salaried workers, as, at least in the us, hourly gets overtime pay at 1.5x normal pay. Up to an extent, many workers appreciate the extra pay.

Not always though, as even then, some companies want lower workforce, and will work them half to death.

Truck_kun, to linux in Why more PC gaming handhelds should ditch Windows for SteamOS

But… it’s a Non-commercial Attribution license. /s/ns

I’m joking, but on a more serious note for those that don’t know, not all Creative Commons licenses allow you to monetize, and be sure to actually read which version of license is used if you plan to use a CC work for anything other than personal use.

Truck_kun, to linux in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

I get that there are a lot of novel are cool distros out there, but I just stick with Debian (or one of the other well known distros that have been around for decades).

I do it because from a security standpoint, they have my trust. Maybe in 10-20 years with a good reputation and history, but it’s not there.

Truck_kun, to linux in I've started building a TUI for Lemmy

I would not recommend working on two GUI’s at once, but if you build it in a way you can use different frameworks for it, the maker of Rich also makes a nice TUI framework API called Textual.

Here’s some projects made with it for a sample of what it’s usage can look like: https://www.textualize.io/projects/

I believe it does not use curses at all.

Truck_kun, (edited ) to privacyguides in BVG out here recommending the best 2FA Apps!

I’d love to know as well.

Been using it for a while as the 2FA app used and recommended by Leo Laporte. I’ve had a good experience with it, but if it has any issues, I would love to know.

Edit: A while being a year or two.

I feel like Discord fills a different need than forum type systems.

The one API I have on discord, likes Discord as a place for casual chat about the system. I think the devs prefer it because it is an active place for the community; to word it better, ‘hey look at this cool thing I did’ > response within a few minutes ‘that’s cool’ heart^5 fire^3 thumbs up^7. Whereas on a forum you’d be waiting for hours, or just not have that casual of a conversation.

It replaces the old usage of IRC servers.

The help channel is highly responsive, and great for things you want a quick chat about, need a response now, or if you get help now great, but if not, you’ll figure it out on your own before you would ever get help on a forum, so it’s not worth posting to a forum.

Threads really do help organize when a discussion is going to be large, and discord is very much searchable, just not from your browser search engine.

For changes to the API, ideas, issues, or bugs, they direct you to github “Discussions” or “Issues”. They do have an idea discord channel, but it’s a more casual thing, or far out there discussions.

Discord does get a lot of hate for it’s searchability, which is valid, but I don’t have a problem with it as long as places like Stack Overflow (or what replaces it) are still around.

Thanks. They either wisened up that people don’t like change and need to force it, or didn’t add the option to android.

The “New Layout” section exists on android, but they got rid of the toggle; now you can only give feedback or learn more.

I would like the option to toggle off new layout, but do agree if that is the layout going forward, they should have it as the default so new people learn it out the door, but those that don’t like the change have a choice.

I’m sure the change is fine, I’ve just spent the past few days too busy to realize it was an update change, and that my app was buggy, having trouble finding DMs, and switching back to servers.

I’m sure it was an announcement/dev notes, but they’ve trained me to not read those and immediately close them, because they happen every few days, and they always pop up when i am opening the app from notification, and I just want to reply to the notification, not deal with adverts for Nitro, or to subscribe now while there is this super special discount, or learn about 3 new features I will never use, nor care about.

Truck_kun, to programmer_humor in It's that time of the year again!

That SELECT and WHERE are all caps, but from is not is bugging me.

I don’t care if you choose to uppercase keywords or lowercase, but consistency please.

Also, great, love it.

Truck_kun, to linux in Windows 11 scores dead last in gaming performance tests against 3 Linux gaming distros

I’m sure there’s lots of solutions, but Steam with Proton for any windows only games has generally worked great for me.

Where I encounter issues, the Lutris flatpak install has worked well for me.

Both I believe use wine, but it is probably easier use downstream solutions like the above when getting started, instead of learning wine. Not that there aren’t benefits to learning it, just in a immediate issues -> lets go back to windows VS it just kind of works pretty good comparison.

Steam having a fair number of games that are directly Linux compatible now days is nice too.

Truck_kun, to linux in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

I actually am in the market for a new mobo and cpu.

Are there any mobo’s nowdays that don’t use UEFI? I just want an old traditional style BIOS with a jumper to restore it from a ROM chip if I get any malware, so I can actually trust my hardware.

I did force myself to deal with UEFI for the sake of windows, but gaming has gotten good enough on Linux, I don’t actually need to dual boot windows anymore.

Am I asking too much?

Truck_kun, to memes in Calculus? Nah, bro, that's easy stuff

I normally buy Charmin ultra soft at Costco.

I was at target and we were low, so just grabbed some there.

Turns out the rolls (cardboard tube and all) were like an inch less wide. For some reason that extra inch makes me comfortable, and I’ve been so angry at the Target rolls while I try to use them up. I have big hands… this kind of shrinkflation can get messy.

Truck_kun, to news in China ‘world’s biggest debt collector’ as poorer nations struggle with its loans

I do feel many of these nations should just straight up rent ports and such to China instead of taking the loans, in exchange for a lump sum payment, with restrictions for military use/limitations, and usage in support of war.

Might not get quite as much money, but seems far more favorable than the outcomes of belt-and-road loans (not just in the unlikelihood of debt repayment, but how the funding is used [vendor/company restrictions]).

Truck_kun, to news in China ‘world’s biggest debt collector’ as poorer nations struggle with its loans

Hopefully this will be helpful (to understanding this type of debt):

https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2018/09/27/american-creditors-say-china-should-honour-pre-communist-debts

Not saying it will be repaid, but at least the article goes into how debt is handled when governments change hands.

Truck_kun, to memes in Sure Doesn't feel like one.

That their local representative was anti-gun control before this shooting affected his own local area, only proves your point more. That he changed his opinion is a good thing, but too little too late.

Very impressed that he publicly came out to accept responsibility for the Maine shooting with his previous opposition to gun control though, and is now advocating for it.

Unfortunately, it may take several shootings in all the representatives’ and senators’ home towns that are in opposition to actually flip them (even then, it wouldn’t change many of their minds, unless it actually personally affected them), and the country shouldn’t have to suffer that. It likely will literally take a constitutional amendment to prevent the supreme court from overturning any legislation enacted (or at least stripping it down to become fluff legislation with little meaning, or effect).
