Wahots, to asklemmy in What are some small things we should change about the human body?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Appendix not coming from the factory is a big one. A slightly better immune system that can get through the blood/brain barrier and kill rabies/amoebas, and other brain infections like TB (without shredding brain tissue) too. If a virus like rabies gets past that barrier, you are 1 0 0 % B O N E D as your immune system is largely locked out.

Wider uterus/vagina too. Human babies have massive heads that don’t fit through too well. It’s like an orange on a toothpick. Making a smaller baby could be a possibility, but survivability would potentially go down.

For very tall people: a larger and stronger heart organ. A second one acting like a smaller turbo would also help. Heh. Failover cluster hearts. You’d probably have to have stronger veins and tissues as a result though.

Wahots, to asklemmy in Ancient wisdom often sounds like common sense now that it is commomly taught. What is some ancient wisdom that we no longer teach because it was wrong?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Without knowing his works, I’d argue for him that he’s right to some extent towards an uneducated population, BUT the reason we have universal suffrage is that our founding fathers assumed that:

  1. Everyone would be well-educated and make rational if not reasonable assumptions about politicians (eg, not elect morons who immediately try and sabotage the government, citizenry, and friends)
  2. Politicians would serve as public servants and would be even better educated and would work hard to brush up on things so that the common man wouldn’t have to learn the ins and outs of complicated decisions in terms of complex trade agreements, city planning and zoning law, and universal medical systems that work across state lines.

Obviously, it didn’t quite go that way. But it’s why I’m such an advocate for good public schools and free education, because it pays itself back in spades when it comes to R&D/innovation and an informed populace who make the country and world a better place to live.

Wahots, to asklemmy in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Good keyboards on computers. At the office, everything are those extremely uncomfortable $5 dell keyboards. At a climbing gym or pool, the liability iPads that you sign forms on is using those really uncomfortable apple keyboards too.

I miss the better keyboards that we had back 25 years ago. Modern box jades bring some of that back for your own PC.

Wahots, to historyporn in American-made M3 tank used by the British in the Burma Campaign, WW2, 1945
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

The Tank Museum channel on YT has really good information on tanks like this one. They explain each tank in depth with dry British humor. I fell madly in love with one of their 70-80 year old curators who was adorably frank about everything.

Wahots, to asklemmy in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

I use a mix of all 3 search engines on firefox

Wahots, to asklemmy in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Would feel pretty horrifying if it were humans in the dog’s place. I’d either tell the owner to get their dog to knock it off or find a new park with better trained dogs (and owners). :P

Wahots, to asklemmy in Former religious lemmings, what made you quit religion or stop being a believer?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

A mix of a generational gap and me coming out. I still like the parts about treating people and animals with respect, but the whole “restoring mana through a church building” parts and going to hell for loving someone just seems strange.

Wahots, to asklemmy in What do you want for Christmas?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Nothing really major. I really have everything I need for now. I’d like a house, but Santa can’t really build one and bring that on his sleigh, haha.

Honestly, moving back closer to my family, friends, and boyfriend has been the best Christmas gift of all :)

Wahots, to baldurs_gate_3 in Baldur’s Gate 3 Slyly Adds Jiggle Physics For D**ks, Balls
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Every game should have ball physics in it. I find DIRT 4 and Battlefield 1 lacking in this regard.

Wahots, to asklemmy in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

I’ve worn both, but I’m just looking for watches that can do 24H time. Smart watches are nice for setting alarms and cooking timers. Regular watchss don’t need to be charged and are much more durable and usually less expensive. I’ll probably continue to switch back and fourth.

Smartwatches don’t really get updated for more than a few years anyways, which is a bummer.

Wahots, to asklemmy in Which things have you avoided or embraced on the name alone?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Yes! I’ve seen it pop up in c/all occasionally :)

The owl house was so sweet. Warms my heart! Had to show it to my SO who was a bit reluctant at first but grew to love it :)

Wahots, to asklemmy in Lighthearted, upbeat shows for adults?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Not adult, but The Owl House was a surprisingly good one. One of those multi-audience shows. Makes me think a lot of about the type of parent I want to be someday!

Wahots, to news in Don’t fall into the trap of ‘picking sides’ over Gaza: Hamas’s attacks were unconscionable, razing Gaza to the ground would be abhorrent. In both cases, basic humanity is at stake --- [Opinion]
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Probably because the Ottoman empire would just crush everyone’s cock with a rock if they so much as started anything. I highly doubt anyone around there voted for the Ottoman empire to occupy their lands and take their resources, haha.

Generally, strongman rule makes things pretty peaceful. Vlad the impaler had a low crime rule, but he also impaled 20,000 enemy troops in a “Forest of the imapaled” and also impaled any criminals, which somehow kept crime remarkably low. But it wasn’t exactly a happy rule, and people cheered when he was eventually ambushed, beheaded, and (fittingly) impaled on the walls above Constantinople…ironically by Mehmed II, ruler of the Ottoman empire. xD

He fought the Ottoman empire’s encroach his entire life and ended up getting ambushed and dying stupidly. But he went down in legend for being crazy hardcore (and his wife, queen Justinia too, who was absolutely mental as well, iirc)

Forever war. Back in the day, the stronger side would just kill everyone in a march to the sea, salt the earth, and nothing would grow there for 300 years until humans finally scraped the dirt and made a small community again. It’s been happening over every religious war, every empire, and every tribe for all time.

Now, we don’t do that. But that means bad blood and prolonged conflict essentially forever, in a long simmering he said/she said involving beheadings and rockets. Best thing we can hope for is either a Korea situation, or some sort of “we’ll make this area into a national park where everyone can visit”, but neither side wants to live anywhere else, and hell will freeze over before all the Palestinians or Israelis are welcomed into the neighboring countries with open arms, lol.

My last bit of hope died when I learned that Hamas executed one of their generals on the rumor that he might have had sex with a guy. The fact that they stripped someone of their 1,000 person command, whipped him, forced him to not sleep, and then shot him three times over something so trivial is a really, reallllly bad sign for any hint of a two state solution. Or worse, cohabitation in a host country. They hate each other to an extreme I didn’t think was possible.
