I am an archo-communist, cat-loving dude with a very eclectic range of interests and passions. Currenty, I’m into networks of all kinds and open source software.

Get an advanced education, work harder, never be the one to say, “That is not my job” was the worst advice I could ever receive. I got into debt and was abused and exploited by my employers.

Your experience is the exception rather than the rule. It’s been shown that rags to riches is a myth perpetrated by capitalism. At one time I had your level of success. It was all taken from me when I became disabled. As a Canadian, you have the distinct advantage of at least some social welfare assistance whereas your neighbor to the south has virtually none.

Here is the Canadian equivalent which is Statistics Canada.

When you start a career, you begin at what they call entry level. Then as you gain experience, you get promoted or you seek other opportunities in the same field that pay more money. Career progression is basically how you are advancing in the field.

Steak as in a Philly Cheesesteak.

What’s really funny is cheese whiz on a steak sounds nasty. But biting into one is like a small piece of heaven.

I totally forgot about Detroit-style. It’s good too!

I wish I could remember the place my Chicagoan friend took me to but it was great. In my area on the east coast we have a chain called Pizzeria Uno which has a reasonable facsimile of Chicago deep dish. But nothing beats Chi-town’s sourdough deep dish pizza!

What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

I am wondering what kind of career moves I have available to me because I am over the bullshit of desktop support. I have been brushing up on my Linux skills, learning docker, and doing a whole bunch of networking-related things. At this point, I am 46 years old. Would it benefit me to go back to school to learn a skill to help...

I can relate! The best antidepressant for me is immersion in my hobby of open source software and computing. I also enjoy learning for its pure sake.

Honestly I cannot think of any right now because I am so fed up with corporate proprietary crap.

Which learning path makes the most amount of sense?

I just found out about The Odin Project, a self-paced online course to learn full stack web development. There are two paths: one is Ruby on Rails and the other is full JavaScript and nodejs. I am leaning more towards Ruby but I wanted to get some more opinions from folks in the field.

What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?

I’m making a fantasy novel. In this one there is a monarchy system, where 4 families rule in turns. After the current monarch dies, the next family in the circle most present an heir from their family to ruse the nation until they die and then the next family takes the throne....

Well point of fact, yes, look at Chinese history. Chinese history is often summed up as being the “Dynastic Cycle.” A dynasty would be generations of a single family ruling over a population.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I would call it a Dynasty.

Can I use Google Play without a Sim card?

Can I use Google Play without a SIM card? I listen to audiobooks and don’t want to drain the battery on my personal phone so was going to buy a mini android and download Libby onto it and use that for listening to audiobooks but I don’t want to buy one if that won’t work. I have searched for my answer and can’t really...

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Definitely! All it requires are having a Google Account.

ablackcatstail,

I currently use Libby without a SIM card.

I’ve often wondered this myself because they’ve got the inhouse engineering talent to do it. If I had to guess, I think they don’t see an immediate and a direct benefit. In the grand scheme of things, the is still small but it is making rather exponential games.

Also, maybe these companies are just in the planning stages and we just don’t know about it yet.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Yes, larger companies suffer from inertia!

In Lemmy, subreddits are known as communities. You join a community by its name, for example !mycommunity. Do a search for that community, click on the search result, and you’ll be given an option to subscribe. Note that the search might come up as 0 results even though you got the community name right. It’s just taking longer to find the community.

Is Lemmy planning on adding commands for maintenance tasks?

As my question reads I am curious if the Lemmy documentation gurus are putting together any recommended instance maintenance tasks. Also are the devs going to implement something similar to Mastodon which has the tootctl command and some various cache maintenance and cleanup capability. Thanks in advance. 😀
