bdonvr,

Israel is just taking their land back

How on earth did you get to that conclusion

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

bdonvr,

Wine/Proton can run a huge amount of Windows programs.

Honestly though I’ve just been using Linux for 8 or so years now and just find some other solution. For general computing it really isn’t hard at all. Perhaps if you have some weird proprietary work software or absolutely need Adobe it could be an issue

bdonvr,

I think it would be pretty easy to qualitatively test this

bdonvr,

I am TERRIBLE at keeping in touch for sure.

bdonvr,

November Christmas music does cause me physical pain thanks

bdonvr,

Doge, it would make crytobros slightly less cringe (VERY slightly)

bdonvr,

Not on iOS, though I setup a shortcut that automatically replaces ?! Or !?

bdonvr, (edited )

I mean I know “ropes” could be used to mean that. But “blasting ropes” specifically isn’t really a thing.

In any case it’s very uncommon.

bdonvr, (edited )

It’s also definitely not something you’ll ever hear.

From a Google search I think this post made it up anyway. Most results are this post, Urban dictionary only added it in 2018.

bdonvr,

My instance of ~300 users (and uh, far less active ones) is costing me $223/year

I’ve had users donate about $25 so ~10% community funded and 90% admin funded.

That’s fine by me at the current cost. Though if we somehow got a bunch of new users I’d have to cut off signups at some point unless more donations rolled in. I could probably handle a sizeable increase in users first though.

bdonvr,

$15/mo server rental, plus a few dollars to store backups on a separate service, object storage for media, email, and domain registration. Total $18.64

I have a home server that could easily handle it, but I wouldn’t want to put something so public on it.

bdonvr, (edited )

Honestly the images aren’t TOO bad, or not as bad as you’d think. I have 160GB right now and pay less than $2/mo for it.

Of course with more active users that’ll scale quickly at which point I’d probably tighten up on the upload limits.

I’m also using Cloudflare R2, I could move to something like Backblaze (which I already use for backups) and could possibly lower that.

bdonvr,

Or because one or both parties are very socially inept.

bdonvr,

Well really what caused that is the socialist/communist revolutions of the early 20th century.

Massive reforms (e.g. the new deal, introduction of Social Security, recognition of union rights, etc) were made in capitalist countries (along with massive anti-communist propaganda) in order to stop the spread of revolution. These were TEMPORARY concessions that we have seen wither away slowly since then. A little cut here, a program cut there, union rights weakened a bit with this law or that.

Now we’re here.

bdonvr,

Yes.

bdonvr,

I designed a chip architecture that runs bash code on silicon.

I reimplemented x86 assembly in purely bash script.

bdonvr,

Language science/grammar/etc are all just observations of a natural phenomena, they are not laws to dictate.

bdonvr,

Just pop it out and wipe it off once in a while

bdonvr,

I appreciate that mental image but I must respectfully inform you that you need to wipe down the socket, not the ball.

Which is why us real trackball users get our tongues all up in there to clean it out.

bdonvr,

I could leave it at work I just don’t want to buy another $100+ mouse, I use it at home

bdonvr,

I bring my trackball to work everyday, seriously.
