beta_tester,

Ever since I disabled every recommendation in libretube I don’t watch anything on youtube anymore because I have no fucking clue that it even exists.

beta_tester,

What about fedora silverblue? Would it have saved you?

I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?

Thank you so much, comrades! I am feeling pretty comfortable with linux mint, and now would like some suggestions for some absolutely necessary FOSS or free license software for the OS. So far I have the standard, Firefox, ThunderBird, LibreOffice, yada yada. Thank you again to everyone on the linux comm! sankara-salute

beta_tester,

Why do you respect it the most, or why is it better than vlc?

beta_tester,

Even if Mint (Cinnamon) doesn’t look as good as GNOME, you can always install another desktop environment.

I’d recommend fedora silverblue. You’ll install all graphical packages via a Software store and you won’t brick your system. Even if, you may just recover an old state. I installed media codecs via the software store, not command line.

Fedora is very beginner friendly too

beta_tester,

Some apps are only available as appimages.

Neverthrless you should ask the maintainer and work towards flatpaks.

beta_tester,

Record with two devices, compare and strip everything away that they do not have in common

beta_tester,

Tldr.

Bt over tor is still not recommended

beta_tester,
  • I don’t get the Q
  • maybe jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/media/movies/… ? I stopped trying to manage a library with mixed languages. German torrents always (most of the time) have the english audio as well. For english only, there’s a dedicated folder
  • audiobooks in english? abtorrents
beta_tester,

The only thing that keeps my laptop on GNOME is the damn beautiful overview. It’s also the only reason I show it to interested people instead of KDE.

beta_tester,

Try to autoconnect to a vpn in GNOME, you can’t do it in the settings. I love KDE, I just wish it was a bit more beautiful sometimes.

My few remaining gripes with linux

It’s mostly libinput. Why the hell can’t I easily change scroll speed on Gnome and not on KDE? Why does gnome have a simple tool (gnome tweaks) to change the trackpad cooldown to change the time trackpad doesn’t work as a substitute for good palm rejection and KDE doesn’t? Why is it a bit of a pain in both to change...

beta_tester,

GNOME settings are widespread. It’s bad right now. Anything that improves that is good

beta_tester,

They are fun and all but it’s free advertisement for them … They are fun and all but it’s free advertisement for them …

beta_tester,

Wrong forum. Ecosia is not very good for privacy.

beta_tester,

Just use the killswitch feature of the OS

Maybe use a work profile

beta_tester,

Go into settings and look for “always-on vpn” in the settings for the vpn and then “block connections without vpn”
