beta_tester,

That doesn’t need a backup from my side. That’s the reason we use torrents and private trackers, right? We have a dedicated group that collectively collect files and share them among each other

beta_tester,

You can’t kill reputation faster than that

beta_tester,

I never understood the “hype” around mint

beta_tester, (edited )

I knew about codeberg but not forgejo

Codeberg is a public non-profit Forgejo instance hosted by the actual maintainers of the tool. They’re compromised with free software and provide their services with no pay walls other than a single limitaiton: only accepting open-source projects in their instance. That shouldn’t be a problem if you want to work on open-source, right?

You can just downlaod any linux iso, e.g. fedora fedoraproject.org/workstation/download , and install it in a virtual machine. This way you can play with linux.

You can also write it to an USB and boot from the USB, nothing grts written on any other storagr device and you can test if everything works, check for compatibility, play around and once you’re done, you shut down, remove the USB and your PC is like nothing has happened. Getting to know how to download an iso, write it to usb and boot from it is a common and easy task.

I’ve never heard of a common video format not playing on linux

beta_tester,

It’s always good to state your distro and DE and if you use the app or a config file

beta_tester,

Everything in that article is GNOME related. Nothing is fedora 39 or linux 6.5 related

beta_tester,

There’s some serios issue with the data in india if you look over time in the past 12 months gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/india

beta_tester,

What about fedora silverblue? Would it have saved you?

beta_tester,

Wrong forum. Ecosia is not very good for privacy.

beta_tester,

The only thing that keeps my laptop on GNOME is the damn beautiful overview. It’s also the only reason I show it to interested people instead of KDE.

beta_tester,

Some apps are only available as appimages.

Neverthrless you should ask the maintainer and work towards flatpaks.

My few remaining gripes with linux

It’s mostly libinput. Why the hell can’t I easily change scroll speed on Gnome and not on KDE? Why does gnome have a simple tool (gnome tweaks) to change the trackpad cooldown to change the time trackpad doesn’t work as a substitute for good palm rejection and KDE doesn’t? Why is it a bit of a pain in both to change...

beta_tester,

GNOME settings are widespread. It’s bad right now. Anything that improves that is good

beta_tester,
  1. Use osmand or opentracks instead. Opentracks is strava without (social) sharing
beta_tester,

Even if Mint (Cinnamon) doesn’t look as good as GNOME, you can always install another desktop environment.

I’d recommend fedora silverblue. You’ll install all graphical packages via a Software store and you won’t brick your system. Even if, you may just recover an old state. I installed media codecs via the software store, not command line.

Fedora is very beginner friendly too
