There’s an app called MoneyStats which does balance forecasting. Forecasting is necessary for me because I need feedback about how my decisions or plans affect the big picture and to be able to see whatever timeframe that I choose

Its the only thing that keeps one foot out of the financial aby$$. I just program in all my recurring and correct any imbalances every few days and review whenever I start losing the plot or just to make sure my model is representative of my reality and how I need to comport to ensure things stay tight

SAD light location and use for programmers?

It’s been a grey winter, and looking to stay that way. I work remote, so I was thinking of getting an SAD light. But I remember from years ago when I had one (and worked in an office) that if I put it next to my monitor it gave me a headache and made my monitor hard to see. Those of you using SAD lights, where do you put them,...

Get the glasses and only use them 2x MAXIMUM (like no more than 30 mins) right as you wake up or want to wake up.

I strongly advise against using them any other time of the day or as an “energy boost”, they should be confined to use when you want to wake up to entrain your circadian rhythms, otherwise just go for a walk. They really shouldn’t have anything to do with working or using other screens. Make sure the surrounding ambient light is decent to avoid strain

When I say the glasses, make sure its white. The jury seems to be out on whether intense blue light has association with potential macular degeneration which is obviously worrisome

Maybe inverse thinking for you could be tempering all that with what might go right and leveraging that as a way to honor both the negative and positive capabillities of your mind.

You’re telling me you couldn’t literally just reverse whatever your pessimistic insights were as a thought experiment and find a way to take both into consideration to inform your final approch or strategy for whatever is at issue?

The best way I’ve come across to illustrate this is

  1. Hope/ideate for the best but plan or mitigate the worst
  2. How could this go wrong; tell me where I’m going to die so I can avoid thar
cheese_greater,

**YESS!!**Particularly important for us AD(H)D folks, its mean to future you to be a lazy jerk all the time

cheese_greater,

Do they need to be unique/new or can you recycle?

cheese_greater, (edited )

So invert it ;)

Seriously, its a good thing you can access that side of the thought process, you may just need to consciously do the opposite as a daily practice to even things out. I habitually assume the worst and I enjoy being proven wrong because it means it worked out well but I might not always get so lucky so im glad the other part’s got me covered

-1 * -1 == 1

cheese_greater,

I’m emphatically stating I had and still have all that, I frequently gloom/doom and think I’m going to fail massively and it rarely happens at all or even close to that extent. And then there’s a little bit of relief which may be addictive.

Like, what I’m suggesting is for a time to write out all your doom and panic projections for whatever is at issue and literally reverse them and see if that can help leverage you out of that pattern once you’ve paid sufficient attention to the risk/that which comes most immediately and natural.

I’m not necessarily saying you have to immediately mentally rewire yet (thats a process), but simply turn whatever first comes up on its head and see where that takes you conceptually

I’m nothing if not non-neurotypical neurodivergent haha.

cheese_greater,

Can you break this up a bit into smaller paragraphs? You’ve got my attention for sure :)

The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

like, it’s still dark at 5pm, there are barely any sports on, still bitterly cold and austere and it hurts to go outside, but you’re not even looking forward to christmas or the new year. the new year is here, and it’s largely the same as last year. except you’re getting older.

cheese_greater,

Everybodys doin it

cheese_greater,

Thanks for reminder

cheese_greater,

I wear a sleep mask so it never really helped me all that much even though I have one and experimented with it. I’ll never dispose of it but it more or less collects dust

cheese_greater,

Hell ya. Can’t sleep without it

cheese_greater, (edited )

It does a few things but it basically entrains your circadian rhythms that mediate wakefulness and sleep. I’m no scientist but they are helpful for both insomnia and depression (particularly SAD) and I find it to be an indispensible part of my morning routine in waking me up and orienting me and fixing my sleep to a proper schedule.

And the light is important in the winter anyway because of the dreariness and darkness but I can’t justify why

cheese_greater,

Dude, try it. They sometimes have em at Costco or you can get the glasses if you want freedom of movement while using it

cheese_greater,

Wahhh, I have so much stuff to look up lol 😭

cheese_greater,

What do they do? Or is this a joke answer

cheese_greater,

Omg, actually a fave of mine too i totally forgot about!

cheese_greater,

I love the wine-glass array version of this :)
