derf82, to lemmyshitpost in What do *you mean things so small we can't see them with the human eye? Are you crazy?

It also wasn’t soap and water handwashing. He had them wash in chlorinated lime, which did turn out to be effective in killing germs but also wasn’t the most pleasant stuff to be constantly putting your hands in.

derf82, to asklemmy in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

My favorite video game as a kid was called Red Storm Rising, based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, and played on a Commodore 64. It put you in command of a submarine facing off against the Soviet navy. Graphics were very basic, but it had a very intelligent engine that lead to needing to use real strategy to win.

Almost no one else has ever heard of it.

Lots of companies are willing to pay for international business class, but not first class. So airlines have responded by making business class nicer and nicer. That, in turn, has made former first class passengers just buy business class because it’s almost as good for cheaper. So people are not buying first class tickets, so might as well eliminate them and add more business.

Worth noting that domestic first class (which is what they show) is a totally different thing.

derf82, to asklemmy in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

What do you think an air fryer is? It’s nothing more than a small convection oven.

derf82, to linux in Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them?

It’s still different from what most people are used to. Thee would be a learning curve. And swapping an operating is no easy task for most, either.

Try more like $500,000 for a bus.

And light rail is $20m per mile or more (way more in an established downtown).

And I am, in fact, a civil engineer.

derf82, to asklemmy in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

Are you saying you don’t believe it? Because you explained why it works pretty well. When the host opens the door, they will always open a non-winning door, so it doesn’t affect the odds at all. There is still a 1:3 chance it’s the door you picked, and a 2:3 that it’s one of the other 2. All the host did is showed you which one it wasn’t behind, and that means the odds of that remaining door is 2:3

derf82, to asklemmy in What are some promising solutions to solar power's lack of night time availability? Is "transoceanic power transportation" on the list?

I doubt Singapore could meet its energy needs from solar even if every square centimeter was covered in solar panels.

But the point is, the pumped storage could be elsewhere in SE Asia rather than trying to transfer power from the other side of the planet.

Look, so solution is perfect. It is stupid to say “well that whole idea should be thrown out because it won’t work here.” That’s no different from anti-solar people saying we shouldn’t have solar because of clouds.

derf82, to asklemmy in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?

For 2 people it’s at least around $2,000 (or the local equivalent) from Hong Kong round trip. Kind of cheap, but not that cheap.

Still, given the carbon emissions of flying, it is far too cheap to fly in general.

derf82, to asklemmy in Does wind power cause visual pollution in your opinion?

Yes. Do does most things humans build. Certainly better than a power plant, shopping center, warehouse, or even many houses and office buildings.

derf82, to asklemmy in What's your favorite restaurant chain?

Culver’s. Butter burgers, cheese curds, and custard all in one spot.

derf82, to asklemmy in Why wasn't NYC's Central Park concept copied by other cities?

Less than 12,000 people live in downtown Cleveland to NYC’s 1.6 million in Manhattan alone. My whole county has 1.26 million, NYC has 8.8 million. I bet person for person, Cleveland has more space than Manhattan

Consider Public Square and the Group Plan malls. Cleveland is also working in a lakefront development.

derf82, to asklemmy in What's a great podcast you'd like to share?
  • The Constant, a podcast that follows, as its subtitle suggests, humanity’s history of getting things wrong. It covers a history of societies most mistaken ideas, like believing birds flew to the moon or turned into barnacles in the winter, to trying to rejuvenate health by surgically implanting goat testicles, to a seven part attempt to identity a submarine found at the bottom of the Chicago River, tracing many failed designs in the process. The host (a playwright) injects a ton of fun humor and very theatrical reveals with clever writing.
  • Our Fake History, which looks at historical people, places, objects, and events that have developed a popular mythology, or myths that may have a basis in reality, and looks at what’s real and what’s fake. Was there a pope that was secretly a woman? Did Ty Cobb kill a guy? Was Atlantis based on a real place? Did the Chinese visit the New World? He often tells great stories, and then revels what’s made up about it and why we know. It’s presented by a Canadian history teacher who also composes and plays most of the music he uses.

Funny you mention those stadiums. SoFi Stadium, where the Rams play, was 100% financed by the Rams owner.

Allegiant Stadium, where the Raiders play, did get public funding, but it was capped at $750 million while the Raiders paid $1.1B.

I don’t like public stadium funding, either, but outside of Olympic spending, cities are mot routinely paying over $1B in public dollars for a single stadium.

Bingo. TARGETED ads is where the money is. They need the app to collect data. This is about selling your data.
