What's the difference between package manager and why are there so many?

Are they so different that it’s justified to have so many different distributions? So far I guess that different package manager are the reason that divides the linux community. One may be on KDE and one on GNOME but they can use each other’s packages but usually you are bound to one manager

Hi, that’s me! I’ve been using apt and Debian derivatives for 17 years. Bookworm is fantastic!

I like Flatpak and Appimage. I won’t touch Snaps.

I’m running the most recent version, based on Bookworm, as my daily driver.

I’ve done my fair share of distro hopping. Mint is the distribution that I have to do the least amount of configuring starting from a clean install.

Stallman prefers to refer to it as Coffee + Creamer.

Xerox did so much for modern computing. If only people knew.

Take a look at this post. It covers some names and stories about contributions that make modern interfaces what they are today.

Maybe they did something like Shamir’s secret sharing… So you only need a quorum of larger number of fragments of to reconstruct the whole? If you’re warp capable and able to seed humanoid life, I imagine you’ve probably built in some redundancy.

That all depends on what you’re using the bathroom for.

We’ve got an elevator at work that is… less than reliable. To reset the elevator is a giant breaker BUT sometimes it’s not the mechanics in the elevator but the control board. To reset that board is just a GFI. Also the lights in the elevator are a different light switch in the same closet.

is there a way tominimise risk while using facebook?

I have a feeling I know the answer, but thought it worth an ask, so here goes - I’ve not used FB in years, and generally try to keep fairly private online (Mullvad, librefox, etc) but I’ve found I’m missing out by not being able to use FB marketplace. If I set up a fresh account, and don’t use the social side of it at...

It’s worth noting that Facebook regularly collects information and builds profiles about people who are not users (or are users who but aren’t logged in). The average user would be surprised what a company like Facebook can put together on individuals who have never made an account.

I had someone get stuck in the elevator at work yesterday. I might send it to her. She seems nerdy but I’m not sure she’s nerdy enough to get the reference… Or maybe she would get it but not think it’s funny after getting stuck in the elevator.
