Last time, I used: “Anybody need anything while I’m out?” and that went over well. May not make it through this surgery on Friday, so I turn to Lemmy for top-notch suggestions for my potential last words!
Like it or not, Lemmy is a bit of an odd, fringe community with a lot of fringe ideals.
I use Google products and don’t give a shit about FOSS services or intense privacy. It’s an unpopular view here in Lemmy, but it’s actually how the majority outside of it seem to behave.
I didn’t join Lemmy because of FOSS or privacy nonsense. I joined it because spez got rid of my Reddit app and I don’t want to use some cancerous app with a zillion ads plastered everywhere.
Look, don’t get me wrong…I am against the idea of megacorps as a whole, but not enough to stop using something that makes my life a zillion times easier and doesn’t actively hurt me.
I get that there are a lot of people with special types of jobs where their specific financial circumstances or the way they earn money is unusual. In that regard, I get why those people need to file their taxes.
But what about the remaining vast majority of people with standard jobs? The government absolutely does know how much I make and it makes zero sense for us to have to fill out a bunch of paperwork and not make a mistake on something that the government already knows the right answer to.
I like how an annual doctor’s visit and a biannual dental cleaning are supposed to be 100% covered by insurance.
But every time I go, I get a bill later on with the explanation that “the provider is asking for too much money for the services so we are refusing to pay the full amount”. Fuck off. That’s not how that’s supposed to work.
This is an interesting one that I hadn’t thought of before. I think the same could probably be said for any sort of corporate job where you’re coming up with stupid corporate nonsense speak. Like whoever’s job it is that’s seems to come.up with a million pointless acronyms for a company that they share with new employees at orientation for some reason.
Diversity and etc. is no doubt important, but should be strived for as a group.
do you find it difficult to get into games? I’ve got Epic Games and Steam Games libraries chock-full of classic top-tier games along with many other newer games like Stray or 2077, and a bunch of indie titles. I just can’t be bothered to download and install them, much less try to get into the characters and storylines. Used...
People are always so quick to jump on the “it’s depression” train, but it can also be totally normal for one’s tastes and interests to change over time.
I used to absolutely love games as a kid and teen. But as an adult, I just have a hard time getting into them anymore. I often seem to have fun watching people play games instead of experiencing them myself, and that’s ok too.
It’s like…after a day at work, I just want to unwind. Gaming requires a degree of effort and can even be stress inducing. So I’m just not super into it anymore. I try to get into games now and then but usually I can’t be bothered.
I mean, you’re right that for some people, it can signal depression. For others, it just signals growing older. Such is life.
Not really a mantra, but I try to remind myself that the only thing that seems to be certain in life is change. If you’re in a shitty spot, just wait for the change. Will it be a change for the good or a change for the bad? You can’t always predict it, but it WILL change. Often, that means when I’m in a shitty mood or scenario, I wait for the change to happen in a more positive direction.
I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....
What is the “DJ” feature you’re referring to? I don’t see that in my app.
Edit: Found it by going to home > music
The obnoxious voice that talks to you every few songs is irritating as fuck, though. I wish it would just silently change genres instead of talking to me it’s a person and interrupting my music.
I work in the surgical pathology department in a hospital.
Anything you get removed from surgery comes to me to be examined. Then I describe what I have and what sort of pathology I can see with the naked eye. I select and cut out pieces of tissue that are important to the case. The tissue undergoes further processing and eventually reaches the desk of a pathologist (a type of physician) who examines the tissue microscopically, forms a diagnosis, and ultimately signs out the case.
My job can assist with several things depending on the case…
To help the clinician confirm or determine what type of lesion or disease process the patient has
To document and confirm that a surgery was necessary
To stage cancer cases
To determine whether or not a cancer or lesion has been completely removed from the patient and there is none left inside their body
To make sure the patient does not have an unsuspected cancer
I see everything from tiny boring specks of tissue they biopsy during a colonoscopy to large cancer resection cases.
The other day, I got an almost entirely necrotic above the knee amputation with maggots. A few days before that I got a 9 lb spleen. It’s fun in the lab.
In the US, my job generally requires a very specialized 2 year master’s degree (on top of a bachelor’s degree in any subject). In other countries, the role of my job can be fulfilled by different types of people depending on the country and education will be different.
I found out about the job on Google lol. I was looking for something hands on in healthcare or anatomy related, but I didn’t like patient contact. I would probably select this career again if I had a second go around. It pays pretty well and is interesting. But grad school in the US is very expensive.

I shit my pants in school at a similar age and left it in my pants the rest of the day. Good lord that was major cringe. Ruined my favorite pants too. I almost forgot about that until your comment.
Imo, it’s absolutely fantastic for things like cards and gift bags.
People only look at a card for like 30 seconds and then forget about it. It makes more sense to get one at 1/6 of the price of a regular one. Same thing with gift bags.
For most other things, everything in it is shit. But it has its niche cases where it’s superior like that.
Similar for me. I played them constantly as a kid. As an adult, I try to get into them now and then but they never seem to hold my interest anymore. They’ve lost their addictive quality for me.
I dunno. Even Amazon doesn’t seem to have good Black Friday sales anymore. The sale prices are often a lie on their website nowadays when they used to not be. It will say the price is a Black Friday sale price, but really it’s always that price.
Even though sales aren’t as good anymore, at least brick and mortar stores seemed to have stopped the Purge-like frenzy of real life battle royales for products on Black Friday. Everything is much less insane because the deals aren’t as good and the time frame for the deals is longer.
I’m still waiting for the day EV’s will be reasonable for people who don’t own a home that they can charge their vehicle at. It’s a humongous population and people don’t seem to have great ideas to incentivize people to tackle the problem.
Years ago I was trying to get into med school. But I didn’t think I could so I stopped trying at the end and pursued a different route. One of the reasons I didn’t go was I was afraid I would kill myself if I went. In the back of my mind I’ve always been a bit disappointed with myself that I didn’t try hard enough to get in, but this sort of cements my reasoning for not going.
I remember when I first got a full time job. I had finished school at that point. Every day I was just so fucking exhausted and wondered how the hell adults do this every day until they die. And then you have some people who do a zillion things after work and I’m just like how the fuck??
I still like working a milion times better than school because…1. I have the type of job that I cannot bring home with me. I don’t have to constantly worry about homework and can really just fully relax at the end of the day. I never could when I was in school. 2. I get to earn my own money and buy whatever the hell I want (so long as I can afford it).
What's an amusing thing to say before going under general anesthesia?
