dustyData, to memes in Reality is becoming a George Carlin bit

Are you just very cruel and sadistic or are you just ignorant of the history and reality of firing squads? Genuine question.

Wow, you really are aggressive and hostile for no reason. You can use Ubuntu all you want. But don’t go around spreading lies just because you are too cognitively challenged to change your DE without breaking the OS. Most people are fine making a fresh install with the DE they want to try preinstalled and it works fine 100% out of the box. It’s trying to make two different DE live on the same system at the same time that is only partially supported and thoroughly discouraged by every single DE developer. Most of the time installing a new DE on a system and uninstalling the old one is a pretty straightforward, although dirty process. Guess who is particularly bad and incompatible with that process? Ubuntu. It has the worst support for alternative DEs, because Ubuntu is not the benchmark for squat shit anymore. Use a real end user distro, and you’ll be able to change DE to your heart’s content without issue.

dustyData, to asklemmy in If you could have any game remade by a studio of your choice, who would you want working on what?

Man, at this point people just want the games to be finished.

dustyData, to memes in My 1070 is still going strong

Thanks for the well intentions, but so far I know it’s not the disks, I changed them last year. I run Linux Mint, so I use other tools to monitor the disks and memory. I actually suspect it’s the graphics card getting funky because running things in software render mode solves the random hang ups.

dustyData, to linuxmemes in Linux too mainstream for some 🤷

ARM compatibility is still shit. All actually useful desktop apps are still primarily x86-64, the compatibility layer Rosetta is hit or miss, everything is proprietary and expensive, and Apple decided the Pro model should only have 8GB for a shit ton of money. Apple is overpriced trash in the '20s.

dustyData, to asklemmy in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

Shoes that don’t restrict the feet movements. Basically gloves for feet. Only protect superficially to allegedly allow the foot full range of motion and train and stimulate the use of all the muscles when walking and running. They reached peak popularity back in 2010. Recently some studies had questioned this claims as they seem to increase the rate of injuries, for of course, they provide no ankle support or torsion protection.

dustyData, to asklemmy in Anyone have any guides or tips for how to decorate home living spaces to feel more "lived in"?

Maybe get a shelf and put just your very favorites en it. Those you just can’t help but return to. Rotate them once in a while if that choice is too hard. Books are pretty, there’s a reason rich people buy false books by the meter just for decoration.

That’s the proper Latin name, natural and common in Spanish as well.

Most of those are perfectly ready for every day use without issues today. All are alternatives that bring new features and specific use cases, solving new problems, or solving old problems in innovative ways. Wayland is an active replacement to an existing technology, as the old X is expected to just not exist anymore at some point in the future. BTRFS isn’t intended to replace Ext4 wholesale, Flatpaks doesn’t intend to replace apt/pacman/etc., Pipewire does the same that Pulse and Jack but Pulse and Jack won’t stop existing. Adwaita existing doesn’t mean that you can’t use QT or GTK in your projects. That’s the difference.

As a result Wayland has the burden to actually fulfill and comply with all the features and use cases that X11 already does, with all the new security improvements on top. That’s a tall order, and until it can do so, it will be undercooked and under adopted, because they set themselves up to that bar, nobody but them is responsible for this. Is the ancient “let’s rewrite from scratch” trap that all dev teams fall on at least once in their lives. It isn’t impossible, but it always takes way longer than the optimist project managers anticipate.

dustyData, to risa in My friend's reaction when he invites me to a bar and I order a root beer

I come from a country that uses artificial mint taste for toothpaste. That’s what I have associated with toothpaste. But I know other countries have other flavors too (like spearmint and such), which taste very different. We also have Malta which is extremely sweet non alcoholic malt beverage. The taste is not strong but I associate it with overly sweet drinks.

UX and UI aren’t magic bullets. They constantly come up with and approve the most anti-user crap. They are just as disconnected from the actual user base as a database engineer.

Oh, my comment was a joke too, darling. We know that no one on project management cares enough to actually have proper user advocates on the dev team.

dustyData, to asklemmy in What can we do, as lemmy users, to fight fake news being pushed in the platform?

I read the modlogs from time to time yesterday. There are people literally advocating for, and up to describing in gruesome and sadistic detail, ways to genocide every Palestinian in Gaza, the West bank and the whole world in general. Some classy fellows extend it to every Arab and Muslin in the world.

I have not read, neither on the modlog nor the posts comments themselves saying anything remotely as bad about Israel. Maybe they are, but I haven’t seen them. The worse was someone saying that Israel needs to not be recognized as a state by the UN. That threw a few people off the deep end, calling the commenters anti-semites along with some other less savory epithets.

A couple of users were also harassing others and flaming on every single top level comment with some colorful language towards Palestine, not Hamas, Palestine.

So, I would say that indeed the allowed opinions were predominantly pro-Palestine, but that’s because they weren’t the ones breaking rules left and right and being uncivil overall. Level headed pro-Israel comments abounded, they were just downvoted to oblivion. Welcome to the internet.
