It seems your machine has 4GB of RAM, in which case you can run KDE (for example) quite comfortably and don’t necessarily need a lightweight-focused desktop environment. So I’d say to go with a popular distro, as the other comment suggested, and not a niche one. Then pick the DE you like from videos/screenshots.

I don’t know how it compares, but I’ve used it on the Pi and on Android before, and both work.

eager_eagle, (edited ) to linux in What's the best way to remote into a linux machine?
@eager_eagle@lemmy.world avatar

I avoid it at all costs as no solution is really seamless, but NoMachine gave me the best (perceived) latency out of VNC, TeamViewer, and a couple others I tried a couple years ago. It’s also cross platform, but if the machines are in different networks (behind a NAT), you’ll likely need to configure port forwarding manually or via their GUI.

edit: I just remembered I even played youtube videos and the transport fever 2 game via NX (NoMachine) for a few hours and it worked well, while other protocols had either too much of a degraded quality or latency.

eager_eagle, (edited ) to linux in KDE Plasma 6.0 Approved For Fedora 40 - Including Dropping The X11 Session
@eager_eagle@lemmy.world avatar

I really want to use wayland - and even though maybe I shouldn’t I still do on my laptop - but man… on Plasma 5 that thing is borked. And I’m not even running on NVIDIA.

Whenever the system wakes up from sleep or an external display reconnects all open windows are gone and the system enters a weird state which forces me to reboot. How was “all windows are lost when the compositor crashes” not something fixed in the early days, is beyond me. That must make even developing for Wayland unnecessarily difficult/annoying.
