fl42v,

Sure, fuck xorg knockoff. What’s the connection here, tho?

fl42v,

There are binary versions of heavy stuff at least. Although, yeah, it kinda becomes tedious once you get into more or less obscure options… Mine was compiling everything with musl (for some reason)

fl42v,

I’ve personally encountered mentioned behavior with kde on both arch and kde neon, so I’m inclined to think it’s their f-up. As for sd-boot, I’m not sure: I’ve used it on arch for a short while only, and then just ditched bootloaders altogether for efistub

fl42v,

I Arched for like 4 years or so, and now I NixOS. Got somewhat tired of modifying configs in 100500 places and eventually forgetting what exactly I’ve changed 😅

Nevertheless, I still think arch is great, and, as a side note, it does provide a good understanding of Linux on the upper-low level (not like LFS or even gentoo, but still very much viable).

fl42v,

I could say inability to edit a config file is worth reevaluating of what is a failed piece of garbage here… But it won’t be fair. If you don’t want to deal with configs, go ahead and use chromeos or something :P

Jokes aside, pop-os is great ootb.

fl42v,

Basically, most of the points there fall into some of 3 categories:

  1. Your hardware is crap:
  • WiFi not working;
  • Nvidia failed;
  1. You ability to read/follow simple instructions is crap:
  • WiFi not working;
  • Messed up installation;
  • Nvidia failed;
  • No answer in the wiki;
  1. Lies/outdated:
  • Updater broke system;
  • Troubleshoot everything;
  • No answer in the wiki;
fl42v,

In my experience, win 8.1 < win 10: less CPU and ram hogging, less telemetry, and overall less frustration. Although, yeah, you’d have to replace metro crap with something less tablet-oriented.

Alternatively, server editions are OK.

fl42v,

Regarding domain names: tailscale funnel rocks!

fl42v,

Python and matplotlib aren’t hard… Plus you get pandas, numpy, and so on. Alternatively, R studio does such stuff ootb, as far as I remember

Idk, excel always seemed unnecessarily limiting and complicated to me compared to proper programming languages. Although that may be because I was taught cpp before this crap.

fl42v,

So, regarding md & beamer: I’m kinda into that “less is more” mindset when it comes to every day -ish writing. Like yeah, you can spend a few hrs formatting the info a certain way, but if that’s not a typography thingy - who’s really going to care how the stuff is aligned or whether it’s divided into 100500 columns?

Md has just enough features to structure the text, and when you need to share, you just compile the doc into PDF which is at least supposed to look the same everywhere. Basically the same for beamer, although you can shove animations in there (right, cause why tf shouldn’t PDF support animations after all)

Rant over 🤣

fl42v,

Hm, looks somewhat less painful to type. Otherwise, needs further investigation; tnx!

fl42v, (edited )
  • Word? Markdown/((Xe)La)TeX!
  • PowerPoint? Beamer!
  • Excel? Well, fuck this; any proper programming language does the job waaaaay better;
  • Whatever their crappy attempt at db-s was called? Literally any non-crappy dbms.
fl42v,

Technically, you can try, but I doubt it’ll work ootb even if the connectors are the same. It would be kinda easier to use smth like an arduino/rp2040 board and connect it to one if thr unpopulated USBs on the board (check if there’s a schematic available, they often leave stuff like ribbon cable connectors for, day, a smort card reader, which is basically USB but 3v3 power)

fl42v,

Yeah, uhm… So, you know, modern cars also come with pre-installed spyware, just like our friend wondows but somewhat worse 😅

fl42v,

They use dashes, which is more readable (“self-sufficient”, and similar stuff), although idk if that’s what you meant

fl42v,

Yeah, right, ofc musk has an underground cum jar. That’s enough internet for today.

fl42v, (edited )

Why declare a war over it? Just sudo sed -i ‘s/%wheel/$(whoami)/’ /etc/sudoers or smth like that

fl42v, (edited )

That’s what everyone who starts learning it does. Then you.jjjj websites or :wq documents, and eventually end up installing vim-like plugins for everything

fl42v,

Huh, so that’s why Hurd doesn’t work? They just expected it to run on some alien tech?

fl42v,

Did they have any? I kinda skipped most of the news abt them since Hugh Jeffreys’ vid featuring their phones.
