What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

fl42v,

That’s kinda weird: shouldn’t they recompile everything first and then replace repos’ contents?

fl42v,

Dang, similar stuff happened to me on nixos. Had to instruct one of the relatives on how to reboot the machine and choose a previous generation in the boitloader 🤣

fl42v,

Been there with sudo. Fortunately, su still works, as well as going to another tty and logging in as root. Well, as long as the root login is enabled; otherwise that old hack with init=/bin/bash may work, unless you’ve prohibited editing kernel cmdline in the boitloader or decided on efistub

fl42v,

Allrighty, now we officially need a program (I’m hesitant to call it malware since technically it’s for the user’s good XD) that covertly replaces a running copy of windows with linux… Besides, I think it was possible before to install stuff like Ubuntu directly from windows?

fl42v,

Nah, that’s when the fun really starts! ;)

Well, on the upside, it definitely works better than coffee or energy drinks :D

Also, nice save with the last one!

fl42v,

That’s the scariest horror story in 2 words I’ve seen so far

fl42v,

I mean, it’s simple, elegant, and destructive AF given the right circumstances. Basically a chaos grenade we didn’t realize existed

fl42v,

That’s an interesting way to distro hop for sure

fl42v,

It’s not like you can’t shoot yourself in the foot while using windows (not sure about macs, tho, but likely just as well). I remember breaking windows countless times while figuring out what service crap can be disabled, removing edge or defender, yada yada.

On the contrary, in my experience, if you’re not actively messing with linux, it’s overall more stable than windows. Like I had to install windows on an actual machine a short while ago, and it was a clusterheck. Drivers failed to auto install (touchpad/trackpoint drivers, for Chaos’s sake), random bsod after an hour or so of normal use, etc. As for linux breaking on itself, I remember like 3 times that happened with me in my ~5 yrs of daily driving different distros, and 2 of those were fixable by switching to a tty (the 3rd didn’t boot, as far as I remember, due to some incompatibility between bedrock and arch).

fl42v,

On one hand, it kinda is. On the other hand, ppl tend to turn out to be complete jerks, and marriage somewhat protects from the consequences of such a revelation. On the third hand, what Bolex said

fl42v,

More like nix in general. Unless you need to setup some windows crap

fl42v,

So that it’s possible for different versions of software/libs to coexist on the same system

Why you shouldn't use a SIM card and use an hotspot as an alternative (piped.video)

The video discusses the privacy concerns associated with SIM cards in mobile phones, highlighting three main reasons to be cautious. First, it explains how SIM cards enable constant location tracking through communication with cell towers. Second, it delves into the autonomy of SIM cards, particularly proactive SIMs that can...

fl42v,

That depends, tho. I personally don’t make much phone calls so it would work just fine… If I lived in USA, that is.

Also, that depends on the phone: one of the main concerns of the video is that gapps can bypass the vpn… And, well, I have no gapps 🤷

fl42v,

To get a truly immutable experience install use squashfs instead :D

fl42v,

It’s a joke; squashfs is read-only :D Stuff’s used on routers and similar stuff

fl42v,

Huh, apparently some vendors kinda do it themselves (not sure if always, tho) at least for the lower bound: cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/voltage_min_design reports 10.8v for a 3s battery which is about 3.6v per cell instead of 3.2. Also the upper limit is uncertain so far

fl42v,

The laptop’s battery during these days would discharge and charge, slowly degrading the battery because only the last ~ 20% would be charged and discharged.

How, tho? Sounds like what we had for e.g. NiCd batteries (memory effect) but do not have for li-{ion,poly} ones.

Also, why would the laptop discharge the battery with ac attached? Sounds weird to me

fl42v,

Well, yeah, luks + sb with custom keys + auto-lock when a usb gets ejected or smth is preferable
