It depends on how and what you’re measuring. A lot of Linux first, like system 76 and purism, do so e serious work on the firmware and boot systems of their systems. Which for some is a huge value add compared.
Controversially, I think the Internet has made society better. We’re still in the growing years of the age of information, so plenty of challenges to overcome for sure, but it largely has made for a more informed society and really empowered the average person despite the resurgence of authoritarianism.
it’s “lazy” according to the “if you got time to lean, you have time to clean” crowd. It 100% does not make sense to me, but do my job from the computer so sitting 80% standing 20% for me…
Yeah, bike paths are seen as a luxury or pleasure activity in most US cities. The idea that, despite that fact that people do, are actually trying to get places or get shit done by biking isn’t really considered…
I want that so bad tbh, I’ve been trying to float the idea of at least getting bike lanes built for kids in the surrounding area of schools here. A kind of starting somewhere plan.
Has anyone had luck or experience with using IPP for printing from Linux? A standard networking protocol for printing sounds like it should make a lot of these problems mute.
directory.fsf.org seems pretty good, actually. I’ve been lurking at electronics modeling software for a few years now and just found ones I’ve never heard of there but also the usual suspects. Maybe a better FOSS browsing tool, but still pretty cool.
I work in tech and am constantly finding solutions to problems, often on other people’s tech blogs, that I think “I should write that down somewhere” and, well, I want to actually start doing that, but I don’t want to pay someone else to host it....
I’m definitely a fan of Gitlab pages for simple webpages I just want on the Internet. It’s nice to have the code hosted anyways (gives me that off site back up safety so my stuff at home can go down if needed).
I found this its the cheapest 10TB Exos drive on Newegg and looking to buy 4 of them. I will be putting them in my NAS that I use for my media library and pc backups. The price I’m posting this is $130, I’m also looking similar Exos drives that are $250 is there a difference? Should I shell up for the more expensive drives?
We used to use smart data to predict when to order new drives and on really bad looking days increase our redundancy. Nothing like getting a bad series of drives for PB of data to make you paranoid I guess.

I know Greek mythology is very centered on the idea of fire being a defining things that made man civilizable. From Prometheus to the sacredness around keeping hearths lit.
Curious how many other mythos carry on those ideas tbh
Prometheus for sure. The Titian that humble his kind, the Titan that modeled man from clay, that stole fire from the Olympians when he saw man had no other gifts, that freed hope from Pandora’s box.
Athenas and Hephaestus’s gifts are invaluable gods of wisdom, craftsmen, and artificial beings, but without fire from the defiant Titan we had nothing to really build our cities from.

Sites should empower parents to control that. Have a sign in by default and an option to ask the site to block ips associated with you to be able to sign up for more accounts.
Are there ways around it? Sure. It’s a just a lock to keep honest kids out. If your kid doesn’t feel comfortable about asking about stuff like this or feel like they have to around you, you aren’t going to win, they’ll find it, and it’ll be a blast for them. If you talk about it, at least acknowledge the issues with it, say when it is and isn’t appropriate, etc it’ll do leagues better then all bans and censorship attempts in the world.
True it requires more coordination to be helpful. And tbh I think every household network should be going through and host a Tor relay so shrug but something to the effect of some minimal form of authentication that the person is a consenting adult that is given out at the discretion of the person would be useful for this case.
Not totally sure what the best way to do that is. Keys, cookies, OIDC from trusted party, block chain, DIDs (Decentralized Identifiers), or heuristics like IPs, or digital finger prints.
Now this is what I am talking about! Just get lemmy/kbin/etc to support embedded video from peertube at least and we are getting closer to the decentralized everything app!
Other integration point, but I’m less sure. Syncing peertube accounts with other instances, so my subscriptions can follow me and my comment/threads can too!
Also, the comments don’t seem to be syncing correctly between the peertube video and the community post. Peertube apparently supports using accounts from other fediverse instances, but it failed for this account I am using now.

I find myself agreeing with the libertarian socialist school of thought, which means in debates I get accused of a lot of opinions I don’t agree with, because I disagree with things using socialist language or libertarian points.
