The international situation is the biggest argument against Trump. Another 4 years of incompetence and self serving is something we cannot really have right now without huge consequences. Kind of feels like all the arguments in the US are just a distraction from the bigger issues.

I liked that quote. Intuit being the biggest waste of money claiming direct filing is a waste of money. Like you said, FreeTaxUSA is at least reasonable.

Hard to argue that having a dozen companies developing IT software and systems to file taxes is more efficient them the organization that specifies the filing requirements do it once. The current system is more like a welfare program for the tax companies.

Lot of that going around. If it is not the flu, covid, or RSV it is the cold. Our doctor was so backed up my wife had to use the online option provided with our insurance.

There are at least 5 people in our extended family that are sick… maybe more. Thought I was done with masks but I am back to wearing them at spreader like events.

I guess this is the long way of saying your not alone. Get well soon.

Keep in mind that he was using a company device. Just do not do that. Similarly never use personal device for work. Similarly do not leave email on the server. This has always been the thing at least in the US.

Something disturbing about Hallmark movies

I was talking with a friend today about Hallmark movies because we all seem to have at least one grandma who loves them around this time of year, and we’re hashing out the tropes they all share because they’re so formulaic that you could probably boil it down to a mad libs prompt, and something dawned on me because of one...

My point is for guys there is typically not that much expectation in terms of spousal earnings while for women there often is. Just my experience. I hope this is changing.

I admit that I am a young boomer but if you look at the next gen, the 30 somethings you still find similar patterns though less strong.

Of the 6 couples in my family of my generation, 5 are the husband doing most of the work outside the home. One is quite equal. For the 30 somethings and of the 5 couples two the guy is the primary earner, one the woman is, the other three are more balanced. Not sure how they think about it or how it will play out over the next 2 decades.

What made me think about it was I was watching “Married at First Sight”. One couple the woman had a huge problem with the guy not having a job at the moment… and it turned out she wanted to be a stay a home mom… though she had a good career. I have seen other seasons and shows where similar things have played out. Woman wanting the guy to be more successful. Not sure I have ever seen it the other way in these shows.

As far a marriage having agreement on the big three: Money, sex, kids is helpful. This has long been known.

For me beyond that my only wish is that my partner be herself, cares about me more then my money or what I can do for her, that we like each other and similarly can stand each other, and our lives are heading in a compatible direction.

I have a wonderful wife and we have been together over 20 years and it gets better every year.

I have wondered about changing views. For me for example Netflix is way too dark. Does the younger generation like this stuff say people under 40… someone must. Just mention because hallmark is the opposite… like sickly sweet.

As far as guy leaving his work… how many woman would put up with a stay at home guy. Maybe some but not likely. When I got married I was just happy my wife had a non-negative net worth.

With how many billion people in the world, any system that expects a monopoly on an idea is a bit suspect. Very few if anyone has a truly unique idea. It is more about who claims an idea most convincingly and effectively.

Why Not Store Encrypted Emails in Plaintext Locally?

Clients like Thunderbird are great because you have everything stored locally so you can easily search offline. They also support encrypting and decrypting emails in PGP. However, they seem to have the same limitation as protonmail where you can’t search through encrypted emails....

I am annoyed by this too. The big limitation would have had you could not use IMAP as that is remote.

The other issue is implementation. It would be easy to forward or attach or just store unencrypted in an insecure way which may not be desirable. Frankly for what I do I would prefer Thunderbird decrypt on receipt but place all content in a vault. If one wanted to add some more restrictions one could make it hard to forward by accident mail that was originally encrypted.

The big issue with PGP has always been a combination of bad implementations and key distribution.

I have Nextcloud on my Media Center. That is just on our LAN. For sharing I use Bitwarden Send. If I had a big file to share I probably would load it to Backblaze B2 and share the link. I pay for Bitwarden and I will pay for B2 once my use goes up more.

Moderation has always been required on the net. It is only a question by whom and for whom. To participate in any social setting either IRL or on the net, you need to conform to the expectations of that community. If you choose to do otherwise then you can expect consequences. What is shocking about this?

Yes. I had a recalled CPAP machine. I had to pay around $1000 to buy another suppliers machine. In the end they said they would give me $40 to sign a release which of course is no thank you. I feel like they owe me half the cost of the new machine. What a ripoff. The way they get around that is just to say the machine has 0 value after 5 years which is not really true.

The whole process was horrible too. Got a notification which basically says you should not use it any more and talk to your doctor. They basically said you should continue to use it. Total double speak. Then at the same time the company says they are working on a plan. Then after streaching it out a year they say it is over 5 years old and your out of luck.

Thankfully I just purchased a new one immediately and skipped the drama.

Of course they would not. They have chosen to be aligned with Russia. This whole thing is a Russia / China thing.

Most of the global south is aligned in staying out of it as much as possible. Their self interest is to play nice to all sides and play all sides.

It is not the entire global south. I think Australia and Taiwan would both feel differently. Very convenient of you to forget that. From the original UN vote it showed that the Russian invasion was widely condemned through out the world including global south with some notable exceptions too.

I know all this. The global south is just pretty inaccurate name for the developing countries aka the third world. It is not at all clear that China should be included. It is also a collection of some pretty much despotic countries though that varies widely. There are also some very questionable trade policies too including cartels, trafficking of all sorts, bribery, corruption, often high population growth, you name it.

China is the one county that could just tell Russia to get out of Ukraine. Same with North Korea. Just look at who they hang out with and you know quite a lot.
