What service does it use? Or is it just a standard for using your own?

This is 1000% not true.

  1. They don’t care if you don’t answer. It costs them $0 to text you.
  2. My profession makes me a target for a wide variety of advertising and my phone number is required by law to be listed publicly.
  3. I already don’t. Mostly because Google Messages filters them in a way that I never even see them unless I’m actively looking. It was only when I got an iPhone that I realized exactly how horrific it is.

As soon as someone makes an SMS app that can filter the 5 spam texts I get every day, I’ll delete my Google account.

I see no reason Jellyfin wouldn’t work for this.

How much power is your current setup consuming and what are energy rates like in your area?

helenslunch, (edited ) to linux in Thinking about making the big switch – recommend me a distro!
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I would prefer a distro that “just works”

Barking up the wrong tree. Most people around here will lie and tell you that it does. It doesn’t. None of them do.

Linux Mint is the most common recommendation. I’ll recommend Debian.

@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Yeah so you’d make your money back pretty quickly picking up a dedicated PC for that.

How bad is it? My current file server, an old gaming rig, consumes 100w at idle.

That’s very bad haha. Most home servers for personal use are using 7-10w.

Although you’ll have to do the math with your local energy prices to determine how important that is. It’s probably not.

SBC (specifically RPis) got more expensive. x86 got more powerful, more importantly more efficient, and cheaper. Also X86 has more software built for it than ARM.

There are a few X86 SBCs now though.

If you already have SBCs and they’re doing what you need, I see no reason to switch.

No they don’t. You can use WiFi. Or Bluetooth. Or 433Mhz radio.

Tesla doesn’t have “creature comforts” behind subscriptions. They’re 1-time payments.
