helenslunch, to piracy in I hope someday we'll find a way to pirated a car
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

LOL how does one go about that, exactly?

Do you walk into the dealer and state affirmatively “I am not buying a car here because I don’t want a subscription!” and then turn around and walk out?

Won’t matter. The company knows you don’t want this. They also know that enough other people will pay for it that it won’t matter. These subscriptions are not new. If people put their foot down and refused to pay for them they would go away, but the opposite it happening.

Sorry.

helenslunch, to selfhosted in Suggestions for NAS (or other hardware) solution to home setup
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Do I have to use a special NAS-specific OS to make use of the NAS hardware? Like to do snapshots and stuff?

No you don’t have to. It’s usually just the easiest way to get one up and running and will have some additional configuration options.

Kinda related: what if I install something like Debian/Ubuntu on it? Can I still use the NAS hardware in the same way?

Yeah of course. Most NAS OSs are just forks of Debian anyway.

I looked into some solutions like TrueNAS and Synology. I prefer an OS that’s free software

TrueNAS is FOSS.

When I have the VPN on I get nothing but a “Session Expired” notice for several months at a time.

It already unlocks locally over Bluetooth.

I understood your point. My point is those electronics make it more convenient to use. Would I appreciate ALSO having a physical unlock mechanism? Sure. It also increases the attack surface.

Cars have had electronic remote keyless entry for decades.

As does Tesla.

Haha yeah there are other, more reliable methods but the “phone as a key” is also super convenient when it works properly, which is most of the time. It just would be a lot smarter if it worked locally.

From any practical standpoint, this makes so much sense.

Sometimes my Tesla fails to unlock for some reason and I have to disable my VPN and then stand next to it like a God damn idiot for 10 seconds while it calls it’s servers in fucking California to ask it to unlock my car.

Sure enough, that fixed it, thanks.

What’s the deal with devs not keeping up with FDroid repos?

If they were lazy they would have just not done anything and let the HA users carry on.

Not stupid, just greedy.

They’re gonna make money from selling whatever data they can mine from your mobile device and likely selling you monthly subscriptions.

This is the great thing about FOSS. Someone else will just take the code and reupload it. If they want it removed from GitHub, they can deal with Microsoft. At which point it’ll just be re-uploaded again. There’s nothing illegal about it.

So Haier suffers the Streisand effect and the people who want to simply continue using it.

helenslunch, to linux in Is it possible to use Google Drive reliably?
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

When I pointed out that that makes no difference…then you switched to another reason.

It’s not another reason. It’s the same reason.

If it wasn’t encrypted it would be trivial to spin up a local integration like Google or MS already have.

Since it is encrypted, it makes it significantly more complicated to develop. While this development may make sense on MS or Mac, it doesn’t on Linux, because it requires more resources and serves a much much smaller number of users.

I’ve already explained all of this in the previous comments.

My Proton Vpn on linux install works

“Works” is right. Like I said, it’s extremely basic compared to it’s MS and Mac counterparts.

the e-mail bridge works

Notice how MS and Mac get fully-featured desktop clients and all Linux gets is a “bridge” to connect to an inbox client developed by someone else.
