Yeah, either openSUSE or Gentoo will probably fix my issues good and proper.

Despite its popularity, I’ve never had much luck with Void. However, I could try it again. 17th time’s the charm!

Just the little things, really. App compatibility, xbps not having too many packages, issues with Musl, GRUB not loading on the LiveUSB, desktop/WM selection, and also I don’t like the way Runit works. I could make it work if I needed to, but overall it just seems like too much effort.

The Musl issues were a while ago. The other issues were experienced on the glibc version.

Void is a distribution I keep trying, but I believe I’ll be either sticking with the Arch family or switching to Gentoo, openSUSE, or NixOS.

I have multiple devices, but I just use my trusty KNOPPIX LiveCD to unlock the disk and move everything onto an external hard drive before either troubleshooting via chroot or just doing a clean install.

Tech support has been my status since I was 12. Honestly, I enjoy being able to explain stuff like this.

What?

That’s what I actually say. “Just use Linux” works better for the meme.

That’s why I ended up installing ArcoLinux on my ThinkPad: it uses Calamares.

Then there’s me, reinstalling the OS because it’s quicker than installing the three months’ worth of updates I forgot about.

And yet, somehow, everyone was surprised.

[Question] Which shell prompt do you use and why?

Hi. I’ve been using powerlevel10k for a long time, but a few days ago, I decided I wanted to customize it a bit. I opened the .p10k.zsh file, and I was shocked. It’s really massive, with TONS of options. I’ve been digging through for a few hours already, and it’s absolutely amazing how much you can customize it without...

I use Zsh with the Oh My Zsh! framework, and I use a different theme depending on which subuserland I’m in, by customising ~/.zshrc. For example, I use the gentoo theme on Debian and its derivatives, agnoster on NixOS, darkblood on Arch, strug for Mageia, apple on my macOS device, aussiegeek on FreeBSD, and gallifrey on OpenBSD. Different themes helps me remember which package manager to use and which distro-specific commands will work.

I’ll send some screenshots in a bit, when I boot up my PC.

I like Zsh because of its tab completion and command history. I also quite like its plugins.

Before anyone asks, I have tried Fish before, and I prefer Zsh. I have tried configuring Bash before, and I prefer Zsh. I have played with Ksh and Tcsh on BSD, and I prefer Zsh. I used PowerShell a long time ago, and I prefer Zsh.

I have a page on my Gemini capsule with a list of the software I use. Ask away about my reasons for any of the entries.

I also quite like LUKS, VeraCrypt, and geli(8) for disk encryption, and I use mainly physical media (e.g. CDs) for music and video.

Well, for all of the above, I’d personally recommend using https://linuxmint.com/ to get started. I’ve always found that it’s too much work to debloat Windows, and it’s considerably less secure than Linux (normally).

Most Steam games run on Linux, but there are a few that do not. Music production could also be a bugbear, as a lot of popular software does not run. You could always try using WineHQ to run the Windows versions, however, or try a compatible alternative.

If you simply must run Windows, you have two options. Dual-booting is a good idea, as this lets you select whether you want to boot Windows or Linux when you turn on the computer. Another option is using a virtual machine; this would allow you to run Windows inside Linux. For this, I’d recommend VirtualBox to start with.
