ilinamorato, to piracy in The "Steamboat Willie" debacle or: Why IP does us more harm than good

That’s a question that I don’t know is answerable, because it comes down to the judgement of the courts; and I certainly wouldn’t want to be on the business end of the Disney legal division in that fight.

ilinamorato, to asklemmy in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

Indeed. I called this “permissions,” but “capabilities” is a much better word for it

Rick Berman is a petaQ.

The reality is, though, that everything is an evolution of something else. “House, MD” is an evolution of Sherlock Holmes. Superman is an evolution of Hercules. If you couldn’t copyright evolutions, you wouldn’t be able to copyright anything at all.

In fact, creative commons licenses (like you shared) already address evolutions in the form of derivative works, which you can reserve in CC with the “ND” license type.

Great observation. Yes, absolutely.

  • the free ad space on your home screen. Sure it’s a small ad, but you see it all the time.
  • notifications. Even if only a small fraction of users allow them, it’s a lot of free advertising. And yes, you can put notifications on websites, but that’s not as reliable or as expected as native app notifications.
  • permissions. The more legitimate apps may provide some sort of additional functionality that their website can’t provide on its own. The shadier ones sell the data they get from the sensors all over your phone.
  • data storage. Technically web storage is a thing, but it’s definitely not something you want to hang your whole business on right now.
  • integrations. You can integrate, for example, Google Pay/Apple Pay on a website, but it’s more of a hassle. In an app, it’s practically drop-in. Same with the share functionality.
  • why not? If you already have a mobile site and can make an app from it reasonably easy, there’s no reason not to. You’ve become multi-channel with no extra work.

There are probably other reasons, but those are the ones that make sense to me, being in the industry.

Unless they’re charging for the app (and if it’s just a webview probably not), it actually costs them money to be on the App Store or the Play Store.

My rubber duck is a Darkwing Duck figurine. He usually does the trick.

Stitcher/SiriusXM has absolutely wrecked that podcast. I don’t know if Roman knew what he was getting into when he sold, but I’ve either lost a lot of faith in his wisdom if he didn’t or in his scruples if he did.

Pocket Casts also has these features.

Same, though I did 30s forward and 17s back. The asymmetric skip has been really helpful.

I don’t have anywhere near enough knowledge about Norwegian politics to be able to speak on any of that. All I can tell you is that, worldwide, men have all the rights, and women only have some of them.

By the way, I recommend against using the “R” word (“Sometimes r— stuff are being addressed”). It’s a slur against people with mental illnesses.

Men having rights is not stupid. “Men’s Rights” is stupid, because we already have them. Any man who has fewer rights than a woman in modern society is discriminated as such because of something about them other than their gender.

It’s like fighting for the rights of drivers of passenger cars on the road, or the rights of cute puppies to be adopted from the pet shop. It’s like owning the Extended Edition of Lord of the Rings and demanding a scene that was in the theatrical cut. It’s like buying a cheeseburger at McDonald’s and specifying that you want it to include beef. It’s like playing Smash Bros against level 1 CPUs with all weapons on and complaining that you didn’t get the hammer. It’s like fighting for LeBron’s right to play basketball; to wit, nobody’s stopping him.

I’m strong enough in my masculinity that I don’t have to pretend to be oppressed just to feel good about myself.

Can you imagine casting for “Ugly Girlfriend?” Can you imagine being the girl who got the part? Can you imagine being a girl who got turned down for the part, especially if the mean kids in middle school found out? “haha did you hear Stephanie is too ugly to get cast as ‘Ugly Girlfriend’ in the John Hughes movie!”

They’re not degrading men. They just know that if someone finds out that boy was the ugly girlfriend photo, the worst insult they can reasonably make out of it is “dude, you’re an ugly girl.” To which the boy can say, “yeah, that was the whole point.”

This men’s rights nonsense is stupid, but even more stupid when the complaint itself doesn’t make sense.

ilinamorato, to piracy in Apps that shouldn't be Subscriptions

This is kind of a bad example because the value proposition is different but still very clear - the default version of the app provides a regular income stream to the developers.

No, I was quite intentional about that example. My assertion remains: if they’re not providing regular value, then I don’t feel obliged to provide them with regular income.

I don’t hope that they go hungry or anything. I just don’t think it’s my responsibility to subsidize them forever just because they made an app for me once. I’ve got bills to pay too.
