Most people on Lemmy right now are not using them in that way. As we grow, misuse of downvotes will almost certainly become more common, but right now people are self-policing their behavior for the most part

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hmm, that is a good point. I really wish Beehaw would refederate with SJW so we could benefit from their activity and experience more. I don’t agree with every decision they make but they certainly have insightful takes at times

But as an intelligent person, you can also discriminate between something that doesn’t convince you personally, and something that is completely without value or irrelevant.

When you refrain from downvoting in the former instance, you contribute to a more healthy discussion. Not every person that I disagree with is a bad person; similarly, not every comment that I disagree with is a bad comment.

I dont use that community so I haven’t seen that.

Maybe try worldnews@sh.itjust.works instead.

Same man. But you hit the nail on the head, regardless of how you upvote or downvote, its usually even better to just make a comment and explain your thoughts, respectfully of course.

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I used a hyperlink. Looks like this without the space (_)

[worldnews@sh.itjust.works]_(sh.itjust.works/c/worldnews)

It’s definitely a community

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m aware of that and I like that behavior.

I’m also wary of potential downsides though. I think in smaller communities it could be a problem because people might start fights with each other when they check who downvoted them. But I’m not sure, at least now we have a good test environment on kbin, and so far it seems to be beneficial based on what you’re saying.

You’re 17, nothing is out of fashion at that age.

But also pairing with a robotics club t-shirt is about as good as it gets for cargo shorts. I’ve seen plenty of grown men rocking that uniform. If you’re into robotics, having all those pockets makes sense 😅

I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

To my knowledge there’s no stagnant water on my property, I’ve run water through all my ptraps, and I’m careful to not leave doors open. Yet at any given time there’s at least 3 in my house. I can’t sleep, i can’t sit on the couch, i can’t exist in the fear of being sucked dry....

Envelopes of $100 bills 🤷 Human affection

I think you made the right choice 😅

Probably had to be Goldeneye on the N64. Split screen with my cousins.

But the first game I really played by myself was Link’s Awakening DX on the GameBoy Color.

Honorable mention for Pokémon Gold.

Edit: Just remembered Humongous Entertainment. Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, Spy Fox on the PC.

Backyard Baseball. The original Super Smash Brothers on N64. Super Mario Bros Deluxe on Gameboy color. Perfect Dark on N64. OK I’m done for now 😅

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

God damn that’s a great point.

News is only remotely viable when done by a professional organization that at least tries to be impartial. You don’t want your news to be filtered by upvotes at the end of the day. Never really considered that.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

You didn’t say anything of substance.

He actually did but your mind is rejecting it.

Nobody can trust the news. That’s not nonsense, it’s a fact. There are no reliable news sources.

You can either deal with it or pretend that the source you find most comforting is the absolute truth and totally unbiased. But then you’d be lying to yourself, which is usually what makes people get defensive 🤔

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

What is the news? How can you arrive at a definition of what constitutes the news without introducing bias?

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think we are just saying that whatever generic, non offensive form of media that you consume is also biased in ways that you can’t quite perceive. You’ve encountered some alternative narratives on Lemmy and you regard them as biased without necessarily making the connection that your own news outlets and views are equally biased. It’s easy to see bias in others but hard to see in yourself

The current federation is not built to support a massive number of users all on the same page.

I am hoping for a solution that involves major servers working together to direct a stream of donations into a group project, a super server designed to meet the need during heavy load events.

It'd probably have to be heavily moderated with minimal local activity. The point would be that when major news dropped, the users of different instances would be able to come to a central forum (the superserver) to discuss with the world, and also to any local or subscribed forums to discuss with their people.

Benefitting all of the admins who no longer have to worry about their server crashing, and all the users who can either avoid the superserver or participate in the larger discussion without any impact to their local Lemmy experience.

The interview itself is the best TLDR. It's 3 minutes 24 seconds of highly concentrated cringe.

Here it is.

Please delete this duplicate response, it's very long and makes it harder to scroll the thread/see my comment. I don't mean to be rude.

You don't need to be one of the 1st or 2nd level replies over here to avoid being buried.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh shit, my bad. I'm almost certain it's because we are on lemmy.ml, this server has been having issues. Sometimes my comments don't show up for hours.

Your other comment still appears for me now, undeleted with 3 upvotes. But if I go to feddit.de I can see it's been deleted.

I should have just let you handle it, woops.

I wonder if you can see my other comment on this thread where I uploaded the video itself? Maybe that hasn't loaded for everyone yet, although it was posted over an hour ago

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I like the idea but we are not ready at all for something like that. It'd be crazy to blow our load too early and draw a bunch of media attention here only for people to come here and find it unusable. If redditors are struggling this much to migrate, the general public has no chance.

See where we are at in 3-6 months and reassess.
