I like communities and sublemmies.

Coms/commus sounds forced and unnecessary, doubt it’ll catch on.

As for Lemmies, I think that should be a synonym for instances/servers. So, for example, the biggest Lemmy with the most sublemmies would be lemmy.world.

And of course, the users are lemmings.

That’s fair and I considered it, but I feel like that’s almost the most damning aspect of Delaware. The only trivia anyone knows about the state is it’s a tax haven; otherwise it is entirely unremarkable, both in public awareness and in fact.

I do respect those percentages though, that’s totally fucked.

imaqtpie, to asklemmy in Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s a very interesting question and I’m not sure of the answer.

Obviously on some level, the cost of the infrastructure scales with the number of people using it. But so does the ability to crowdfund, if there are 100x more instances then theoretically there would be 100x more potential donors to meet the cost.

One clear way to influence the scaling in our favor would be to utilize instances with clear themes and purposes. If everybody on a particular instance is interested in the same content, that reduces the wasted computational resources compared to an instance where all of the users are interested in different topics, and thus subscribed to a much wider variety of communities.

My intuition is that as long as the platform only hosts text and images, the costs should be manageable, especially with inevitable improvements to computational efficiency that are likely to come as Lemmy matures. For instance, I believe there is some kind of patch that reduces storage utilization that should be shipping with the next version (0.19).

imaqtpie, to asklemmy in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m aware of that and I like that behavior.

I’m also wary of potential downsides though. I think in smaller communities it could be a problem because people might start fights with each other when they check who downvoted them. But I’m not sure, at least now we have a good test environment on kbin, and so far it seems to be beneficial based on what you’re saying.

Same man. But you hit the nail on the head, regardless of how you upvote or downvote, its usually even better to just make a comment and explain your thoughts, respectfully of course.

imaqtpie, to asklemmy in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

You’re 17, nothing is out of fashion at that age.

But also pairing with a robotics club t-shirt is about as good as it gets for cargo shorts. I’ve seen plenty of grown men rocking that uniform. If you’re into robotics, having all those pockets makes sense 😅

imaqtpie, to asklemmy in What are your favorite "ugly" games?

Yeah especially Dwarf Fortress. The gameplay:graphics ratio is over 9000

imaqtpie, to asklemmy in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

God damn that’s a great point.

News is only remotely viable when done by a professional organization that at least tries to be impartial. You don’t want your news to be filtered by upvotes at the end of the day. Never really considered that.

Lmao I've seen this happen a few times before and I knew it would end up being hilarious at some point.

Congrats, you just got a lucky little bit of Lemmy history.

Hmm, that is a good point. I really wish Beehaw would refederate with SJW so we could benefit from their activity and experience more. I don’t agree with every decision they make but they certainly have insightful takes at times

Lol!

Yea Vermont is great, but if had just remained part of upstate New York this whole time, instead of becoming its own state, it seems like it would make very little difference.

imaqtpie, (edited ) to asklemmy in People from the "hotter" regions, how do you deal with the heat?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, a whole-house fan. You turn it on in the evening and it expels the hot attic air from the top while sucking in the cool fresh air through open windows. It actually works really well and is much more energy efficient than AC. When it gets super hot you still need AC though.
