Why are we as humans obsessed with mass-extinction of our species?

I was having a conversation with my friend about this. We were discussing AI and she believes AI will destroy all of humanity just like so many others. I personally don’t believe that. I’m aware of all the theories and the multitude of ways that it could happen and I understand that with AI, in theory we wouldn’t...

intensely_human,

Because when the world is about to end it’s an excuse to not try at life.

intensely_human,

Well hey as long as you’re not screaming

intensely_human,

That’s the sort of thing they should have told you

intensely_human,

I could outrun a lot of people down the stairs

lmao

intensely_human,

I had screaming from an untreated tooth infection once. About three days of screaming. Changed me permanently.

intensely_human,

What makes you think that the bad actions of bad actors are going to cause our society to no longer survive? Bad actors have always existed, and yet we survive.

I disagree with the implication that anything you mentioned represents an existential threat.

intensely_human,

What costs do you think there will be then, if the problem persists?

A 15th century French painting depicts an ancient stone tool (phys.org)

More than 500,000 years ago, our human ancestors used large, stone tools known as “Acheulean handaxes,” to cut meat and wood, and dig for tubers. Often made from flint, these prehistoric oval and pear-shaped tools are flaked on both sides and have a pointed end....

intensely_human,

The red and blue cherubs in the right painting are intense

intensely_human,

Yes you can change personality drastically.

Generally speaking, anything described as a “spiritual practice” will tend to alter people’s personality to the degree they put effort into it.

It’s not normal for personality to change much. People’s personality changes under relatively rare conditions: trauma, enlightenment, extreme conditioning.

Another commenter mentioned psychedelic drugs and those are definitely catalysts for personality change.

The things that have changed my personality the most are:

  • abuse
  • violence while homeless
  • ayahuasca ceremonies
  • getting the 10-series from a rolfer

By “personality” here I’m talking about emotional patterns, which become the foundation for all sorts of beliefs, tastes, tendencies, social roles.

By emotional patterns I mean the overall averages of joy, sadness, fear, openness, guilt, etc, both over time and also in their typical daily cycles.

intensely_human,

LSD as an EDM party drug is excellent in the same way Batman would make an excellent shade structure.

intensely_human,

How much did that DBT cost you? It’s a pretty big undertaking right?

intensely_human,

Visualization is what it’s called.

intensely_human,

Can you give examples of what you’re talking about?

intensely_human,

Find communities with mods who will seriously look into reported fake news

What are some easy ways that you can improve energy efficiency and be more eco-friendly in your rental apartment?

For starters, you can add weather stripping to outside-facing doors and windows. If your landlord doesn’t want to pay for it, then it can be found cheaply on aliexpress. Also, add insulation outside-facing switch covers and outlet plates.

intensely_human,

How is composting better than not composting?

intensely_human,

Which brings us back to reducing consumption of meat

intensely_human,

Get all the people you want to have universal health care, to want universal health care. If you want it for them, sell it to them.

The only thing ever stopping any policy from existing is vote counts. Convince others that universal healthcare is in their best interests. If you’ve tried that and failed, take steps to improve your communication skill and try again.

intensely_human,

Great! That means you haven’t reached 43% of Americans. Keep pushing, you can do it!

intensely_human,

Playing a piano can do this because the velocity of each keypress is a big part of the expression, and it’s a scalar value meaning infinite degrees of possible variation.

intensely_human,

I think it’s stupid that we use the words white and black to refer to people, who are literally all brown. We have a spectrum of melanin content and we just turned it into two big categories to justify slavery, and we never changed it back. We still think of it like two big separate categories of people, and now we’re all hung up on making sure there’s no difference between these two completely arbitrary made up categories.

Will human societies always enshittify themselves?

It seems society always goes down the shitter over and over following the same path. People rise to wealth and power extracted on the repression of the masses, massive disparity, ignorance exemplified, xenophobia and blaming minorities for any possible issue, laws signed with golden pens but becoming more meaningless when...

intensely_human,

It’s called corruption and yes every institution eventually becomes corrupt.

The trick isn’t to give up, but to constantly renew the institutions by being present and alive and talking openly about what’s wrong, how to make it better, etc.

intensely_human,

What can I do to make amends?

Be a good person, try to do the right thing, be a positive influence in the world

intensely_human,

What kind of scabs do you hire for a jousting tournament?

intensely_human,

My dad hasn’t disciplined his dog at ally. I periodically take care of the dog when he’s out of town, and any time I do the first couple walks the dog is crazy. Constantly pulling, bolting and yanking my arm (this has given Dad a shoulder injury).

But I don’t put up with it, and after a couple walks the dog respects me and just walks alongside me.

The weird thing is my dad was in the army and is one of the most disciplined people I know. I don’t know why he seems unable (or maybe uninterested?) in training the dog.

He’s a smart dog. He picks things up very quickly. I swear he understands about 50 - 100 words of English.

Just seems so weird that my dad wouldn’t train his dog.
