jasondj, to memes in May as well buy burgers in the US, since you already paid for most of it through taxes!

Most retail nut milk is actually mixed with a variety of gums and other texture enhancers.

Fresh, homemade oat milk is actually really easy to make by that process, but store-bought oat milk needs to have consistent flavor and texture/mouth-feel. So there is a bit more that goes into it.

This is also true of other non-dairy milks. That’s why I only use Trader Joe’s or Westsoy shelf-stable soy milk for making yogurt. No gums.

Usually I pipe my cats to more, but to each their own.

jasondj, to upliftingnews in Texas church defies government crackdown by blessing drag queens

I checked and Mrs Doubtfire doesn’t have any dates in Texas on their calendar.

Jagged Little Pill will be in Dallas in January though. That show is…a bit, what they would call, “woke”. And there’s a character who was originally non-binary but now I think she was rewritten as lesbian.

Oh, wasn’t Roxie Hart played by a transgender black woman for a bit?

jasondj, to news in Oil prices have risen. That's making gas more expensive for US drivers and helping Russia's war

Personally I think gas is still too cheap.

Gas should be prohibitively expensive. It’s price should reflect its impact.

Unfortunately this would crumble the entire US and possibly western economy. It works in most of the rest of the world because the commutes are smaller and the alternative transit is plentiful.

jasondj, to mildlyinteresting in found a confusing bolt cleaning my parents' garage

Could’ve been a makeshift hook. Or a lock pin/bolt (literally) for one of those simple gate latches.

jasondj, to linux in Today GNU/Linux is 32 years old

It’s a shame. Linus was and is far more deserving of respect for his contributions to technology than Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Probably even Woz. But he’s by far down the line in terms of fame and fortune. Except maybe Woz.

jasondj, to mildlyinteresting in One of the claims on this Belvita packaging only appears in English

I remember seeing a giant jug of Cotton Candy at Walmart that said “A naturally fat-free food!”

Like, no shit, obviously, it’s literally sugar and food coloring.

jasondj, to mildlyinteresting in The Xoloitzcuintli is an ancient Aztec breed native to Mexico, once considered as guides for the dead on their journey to the underworld

Also known as a Xolo dog.

Conveniently, a Xolo dog named Dante was Miguel’s alebrije in the movie Coco.

Artist Diego Rivera was known to be fond of Xolo dogs, and there are pictures of him with his dog and Frida Kahlo, whose likeness also had a cameo in Coco and identified Dante as both a Xolo and an Alebrije.

jasondj, to mildlyinteresting in "Progress"

Sure did. I’ve lived in RI my whole life save for when I lived just barely into MA about 5 years ago.

Pardon the Reddit link, but as soon as I saw a before and after a few months ago, I was awestruck.

jasondj, to mildlyinteresting in in Australia, when we pay taxes, we get a receipt. The receipt shows what our taxes were spent on

Comparatively, in the US a $90k USD salary is about $10,415 in federal taxes.

However, my family healthcare is about $22k in premiums alone, for a high-deductible plan. This includes the employer-paid portion, as that is part of my total compensation package. Then there is the deductible ($5k) before the insurance starts paying out. And this is not including Medicare/SS taxes as well.
