jordanlund, to asklemmy in What do you think is the coolest designed sci-fi gun?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Spetsdöd.

I guarantee you’ve never heard of it because it only appears in a series of novels by Steve Perry, the Matador books.

The gag is, it glues to the back of your hand. The barrel runs along your index finger, and you fire it by pointing your finger and touching the barrel tip with your fingernail.

It fires microdarts which can have a variety of effects, the #1 use being a drug called “Spasm” which makes every muscle in the body contract involuntarily, leaving the victim tied in a knot for 6 months.

The original trilogy of books:

The Man Who Never Missed
Matadora
The Machiavelli Interface

Then solo books after:

The Albino Knife
Black Steel
Brother Death
Churl

Prequels:

Omega Cage
The 97th Step
The Musashi Flex

Temple of Apshai

You’ve never heard of it, and modern RPGs wouldn’t exist without it.

Reminds me of the “NO PLATE” story.

Which is… apparently TRUE? O_O

jordanlund, (edited ) to movies in ‘Superman: Legacy’ Sets María Gabriela De Faría To Play Villain The Engineer
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The Engineer is not a villain though… and isn’t The Authority another property on the film list?

From left to right:

Swift
The Doctor
Apollo (in white)
Midnighter (bottom, in black)
Jenny Sparks
The Engineer
Jack Hawksmoor

I’m assuming the movie will have to have Jenny Quantum instead of Jenny Sparks since they represent the turn of each century.

Waiting for a film version of the Chrononauts comic book. They just went all out “fuck causality!” and RAN with it. It’s quite literally insane.

jordanlund, to cooking in How much flour would I need for an XL pizza?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, like I say, it’s not a standard. :) This was an argument we had with an idiot teacher on some kids homework back in the day.

hellogiggles.com/confusing-pizza-math-problem/

“Marty ate 4/6 of his pizza, Luis ate 5/6 of his pizza. Marty ate more pizza than Luis. How is this possible?”

Kid wrote “Marty’s pizza is bigger than Luis’ pizza” and got marked wrong. Even though the question stated it as fact and asked for an explanation.

A 12" pizza would be 113 square inches. 4/6 would be 75.3 square inches.

A 7" pizza would be 38.48 square inches. 5/6 would be 32 square inches.

First 2/3rds of Wonder Woman was fine, but it fell apart at the end. WW 84 though, eesh. Bell to bell just trash, except Pedro Pascal who is a joy!

2 hours seems normal to me, but I could definitely see it as you get closer to three.

Hateful Eight had one and that was 2 hours 55 minutes.

I bet the internet has a list of movies with intermissions:

(looked, lots of lists, but not correlated with run times)

Cleopatra was almost 4 damn hours!

@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

This ^ Egg Rings.

jordanlund, to asklemmy in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The Monty Hall problem.

You are given a choice of three doors, let’s call them 1, 2, and 3.

Behind one of the doors is a fabulous prize. Behind the other two are joke prizes worth nothing.

You are asked to pick a door. It doesn’t matter which one you choose, because it’s not opened inmediately.

Instead, the host opens one of the doors you did not pick to reveal the gag gift.

He then asks you if you want to change your choice.

What are the chances of winning? Should you choose a different door, or keep your existing choice?

The math says, your chance of winning if you stay with your choice is 1/3. Revealing the contents of one door does not change that, it’s still 1/3.

Switching to the other door gives you a 2/3 chance of winning. Not 1/2 or 1/3.

behavioralscientist.org/steven-pinker-rationality…

“If the car is behind Door 1, you lose. If the car is behind Door 2, Monty would have opened Door 3, so you would switch to Door 2 and win. If the car is behind Door 3, he would have opened Door 2, so you would switch to Door 3 and win. The odds of winning with the “Switch” strategy are two in three, double the odds of staying.”
