We use windows at my work (I’ve been using Linux for 2 decades on home computer). I’m trying to migrate our work CPUs to Linux but the biggest road block is my unfamiliarity with librecad, I’m used to autocad. I use cad command line a lot and it’s hard to live without auto suggest commands. Libre has the capability but it’s very rough and not mature.

laverabe,

My personal preference would be a consumer model, <$400 usd, that doesn’t require wifi or bluetooth for any functions (preferably not even having that capability)

laverabe,

I miss the instant channel switching on old analog tv sets. Everything now is digital so the switching is done with microprocessors, but on old sets you could flip through about 5 channels a second, as fast as you could press the button.

laverabe,

yeah, looked like it was from the 50’s

laverabe,

There are several out there without any connectivity hardware

laverabe,

Well whatever the most cost effective method of storing DC power from solar panels would be. I figure deep cycle lead-acid is probably still the cost per watt leader, but was just pondering the question who anyone who knows a bit about the topic.

laverabe,

Ubuntu shouldn’t be with those who care about privacy. Snap is completely integrated into Ubuntu now.

They’re going to be just as bad as Apple, Google or Microsoft if they’re given the market share. Corporations care only about one thing.

honestly Libreoffice is not on par with MS Office. I use MS at work and Linux at home and Libreoffice is great for general use, but it is very rough around the edges, and does not have all the capability that MS does. I wish it were not the case but lack of an excellent office suite is one weaknesses of Linux.

laverabe,

With the way most cities are designed, a bicycle is not a safe option for day to day transportation for most people.

laverabe,

lol, it’s actually down right now. web.archive.org/web/…/lemmy.sdf.org.html

Says it’s been down for a week

laverabe,

long term I’d like to, but it requires some investment in dedicated hardware, and I’m guessing getting a domain is not free typically either. How much does it cost to setup and operate a basic server month to month?

laverabe,

how do you find out where they are geographically located? I see they’re in the US from the fediverse.observer list but it doesn’t explain what state they’re in. The server could still be 3000 miles away depending on what state it is.

laverabe,

why would i be volunteering? I’m having lag problems with the server because of it’s geographic location in the Netherlands, what does that have to do with volunteering as a mod? lol

laverabe,

ah. But at the same time it would be good if Lemmy was not as centralized on a single server. Lemmy.world is most of Lemmy at the moment, and when it goes down almost every other server is a snapshot frozen in time.

I think it would be good if there were better tools to find closer servers (like geographically <1000km ) and to spread the fediverse out a bit.

laverabe,

ah, the Ender Wiggin’s strategy. The Art of grade school War. A++

laverabe,

One option that doesn’t require any commitment is to just make a bootable usb drive that you can run to ‘test drive’ Linux. Ubuntu is probably the easiest for beginners to learn since there is so many forums online to look at when you have issues.

laverabe,

To be fair both the US and EU are a federation of states (the latter sharing aspects of a confederation as well 1. In the US all state borders do look like this, so in a way free travel among the ‘independent’ states is allowed the same as in the posters picture.
