@memfree this. A genocidal, ecocidal planet surrounded by space junk seems like an incredibly unappealing thing to contact.

An ant nest, if they will let me.

@Gamers_Mate always!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Bunnylux okay here's one: ants have hospitals where they treat wounded ants.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Bunnylux really. Here's an article on it.

@Gamers_Mate I've been pretty good to ants over the years so I was hoping they would recognise me from that. :)

Can anyone else feel sensations in their brain?

Last time I checked there aren’t nerve endings in our brain, so it should be impossible to feel sensations in my brain. However, at random times during my life, like seeing the plot twist in Fight Club for example, I’ve felt feelings in my brain. I just felt it again now while doing some intense introspection, and I just...

It's most probably feelings from your nerves, that you are re-interpreting as coming from inside your brain. Kind of like how headaches sometimes feel as if they are in the middle of your brain.

This picture reminds me of that superstition that cameras can steal your soul.

Except for that woman behind Zucks shoulder who looks like an evil henchman. At least that's an actual human expression.

@driving_crooner cool! The plot is terrible but the film's a lot of fun.

Pig was a masterpiece. Mandy is insane.

I enjoyed him as Dracula in Renfield recently - my mini review here.

Asked about the supposed trickle of aid coming into Gaza, the woman, says there is plenty of aid

This is problematic. We all know how much aid is getting through because the humanitarian NGOs are fighting for every inch of it and credible news agencies are reporting on it.

So right off the bat she's made a claim that's easily disproved. I've no doubt she believes what she's saying, but she's not a reliable witness.

This is a bit like if a news agency interviewed my dad's Q-anon friend.

@Skullgrid I don't really know why they do that but my best guess is that joining others to express anger at a third thing is a form of social bonding.

I used to have several neighbours who would watch a weekly television program on animal abuse. As far as I can see, the experience of gathering next to the letterbox and denouncing the animal abusers gave them a sense of community.

It may also fulfil the dual function of reassuring them that the world has plenty of people who also don't support the hated object.

@Sina no mother would, and under normal circumstances neither would medical staff. As the article states, staff were pleading for help.

These babies were in an Intensive Care unit. Most were premature babies who were supposed to be in incubators. They are vulnerable and need to be kept warm, may be tube fed or require oxygen. It's difficult for parents, who usually cannot be there all the time.

It is more likely that the mothers were unable to get to the ICU. We do not yet know how many died trying.

@Dr_Cog

There were also horrific war crimes in WW2, including the bombing of civilians. War crimes are war crimes no matter who commits them.

I don't think it's really an appropriate comparison to make, but since you are making it, approximately 0.4% to 0.6% of Germans were killed by bombing in WW2.

The death toll in Gaza is already at 0.75% of the population, and growing.

a lot of them died in the interest of stopping them.

You are conflating innocent people with armed forces in this sentence. My point was that it is not the same "them".

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Fermiverse the news that most of us are interested in is coming from respected medical staff, reporters, and humanitarian NGOs.

I have no particular reason to distrust those three groups.

There are more than two "sides" here. Personally I am on the side of innocent civilians, no matter what their ethnicity or religion are.

@CaptnNMorgan that's an interesting point.

As far as I can tell she never worked in Hollywood - she lives in the UK and the films mentioned in the article include a lot of British movies.

That might be why the Tom Cruise eye contact thing stood out to her as an example of ridiculous heirarchy.

I wonder if it was a Hollywood studio shooting on location, or some sort of co-pro.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@CaptnNMorgan yeah I'm happy to be agnostic on it. Ironically though, him acting unaware of his cult's behaviour probably is a big part of what makes him a bad person.

I just liked this article because I thought Jill Goldston's life sounds super interesting.

We have seen 20 minutes of 'Dune II' with Villeneuve and we have good news: the expectation is more than justified (www.ruetir.com)

Last November we had the opportunity to attend an exclusive twenty-minute screening of ‘Dune: Part II’, the highly anticipated second installment of the monumental adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic that Denis Villeneuve is carrying out. Of course, it is early to give an opinion, but we can assure that...

@mhague I had the opposite problem, I felt like the pacing was off because it drags in the second act. I still want to see part 2 though.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@mhague yeah it was spectacular to look at and I felt it was just getting interesting.

Ssssh don't give them any ideas for the third installment.

livus,

Yes, this was a sharp level of activity.

Given the rumours about Egypt giving a warning 3 days earlier, I don't think Hamas is likely the only potential source or beneficiary of the information.
