majestic,

Why everybody is talking about signal? Isnt a matrix also a good alternative? It requires no phone number + has almost the same feature set. For chatting with family and friend it scales enough good. It is fully open source.

majestic,

In Matrix all u need is username, email and password and ur ready to go. Homeserver is configured automatically to matrix.org (which is a problem, but nvm)

The downside of matrix is complexity of choosing a client though. And in general understanding a concept of matrix is not easy for regilar person.

For example u can say: “Im on Signal”, but u cant say: “im on FluffyChat”, or Element whatever, it sounds wrong, cuz these are only the clients and everything is working on matrix. But the regular person needs an object: telegram, signal, whatsapp - these all are just single entities. On the other hand u have matrix with clients, homeservers, spaces and all of this complexity, and that is not easy to understand.

Yeah, i hope in future this problem will be resolved.

What are the differences between linux distributions?

Hey guys! Trying to understand what developers actually do to create a yet another distro, or what are the differences between existing distros. Lets say we have ubuntu and fedora. What are the differences? Excluding DE, Installer, theme, installed packages/libs and package manager. They both are FHS compliant, both running...

Hannah Montana Linux

Yeah, love it

Im not talking about comparing these distros, nor using void on NixOS. Im asking if i had all packages that are preinstalled on void, present on NixOS as well. Would i be able to run some packages from void linux repos on NixOS? If i make nix derivation with package from void repo and install it, would it work?

Looks like the answer is “Yes”, but im not sure.

majestic,

So basically if i have all Voidlinux’s programs installed on NixOS, i can have some decent amount of packages (that are not heavily depending on init systems or some other non trivial stuff) from Void repos running on NixOS?

majestic,

Thank you for this nice answer!

majestic,

NixOS, Alpine and Gentoo are also pretty popular, but yeah, Fedora and Ubuntu it is the distros the regular person is associating linux with. Or doesnt know what is linux at all :)

Btw i use NixOS

majestic,

You’v seen it only cuz its so cringe that, that attracts the people

Why I need extra kernel modules to be able to run Wayland on nvidia?

If i run X.org i dont need to modify my kernel or its configs, it just works well (well, well for X.org) out of box. With wayland its the other story. I need to enable nvidia-dkms module and much other stuff to should be configured. There is a whole page about enabling hyprland on nvidia....

You could try system wide macros. If you type @l, macro deletes last 2 chars and types lemmy

majestic,

Shit, backdoor should be cleaned first. What an animal would do it without cleaning
