It's also because the bacterium in question is anaerobic, so it dies in an oxygen environment; rusting consumes oxygen, so it helps preserve the bacterium longer out of soil.

Edit: I had always been told this, but evidently it isn't true. The rust does not seem to have any effect on the bacterium that causes tetanus. Apologies for spreading misinformation.

3blue1brown is a great call.

I would add Applied Science and NileRed (who does chemistry experiments) as possibilities if OP likes their voices. Their content is very methodical and uniform. My cat likes their videos, which seems like a pretty good metric for this use case.

I also love vihart, who does math videos, but her stuff is a little more varied, including some music, so OP might want to evaluate her during the day before trusting her channel for sleep.

Jeremy Fielding has a great voice if you want videos about engineering and how to salvage motors out of washing machines and treadmills.

I'll consult my subscription list and add more if I find any.

I really didn't take that as their implication. Apartments in New York are often not that comfortable--they can be cramped and cluttered, and not even all that private thanks to thin walls and sometimes even shared bathrooms. So even an introvert with that kind of apartment tends not to spend much time in it apart from sleeping. Instead they'll go to libraries or museums or parks or makerspaces or cafes. It's surprisingly easy to be alone in public in New York.

I think that's all they meant. I see how you could take their comment differently, but I think they were being sincere. Actually spending a lot of time in their tiny dismal one-room apartment with no natural light is actually a mistake that some introverts make when they first move to New York, and it's genuinely depressing to do that.

A caveat to all this is that I've only spent very brief periods in New York, and I do find it overwhelming, partly for this reason. But yeah. I don't think that person meant to condemn spending time alone; they were just saying that treating a New York apartment like a solitary confinement cell isn't good for your mental health regardless of your socialization tendencies.

I still have an account there, though I'm not using it much and am considering my options for data takeout and deletion. It feels pretty different to me, though, honestly. I think seeing it as though "things are dying down" is short-sighted. With the mod teams wiped, BotDefense gone, and so forth, I don't think things are going to stay "back to normal" for long, even if you think they're there at the moment, which I kinda don't.

That said, I'm not at all certain the fediverse can take its place. It'll depend a lot on how many folks start to use it. It's an uphill battle.

But Reddit, well, I expect it to head downhill pretty badly.
