For me the answer is that I need off site backup anyway for stuff like important digital documents, passwords and more. For me a dedicated storage provider I trust far more than Google/Apple/Microsoft which all have a financial interest in understanding me and my patterns to better sell additional services too me. So I use Dropbox but if you’re more technically inclined and have a lot of data then something akin to say Wasabi could make financial sense.

Is this Seagate Exos drive too good to be true?

I found this its the cheapest 10TB Exos drive on Newegg and looking to buy 4 of them. I will be putting them in my NAS that I use for my media library and pc backups. The price I’m posting this is $130, I’m also looking similar Exos drives that are $250 is there a difference? Should I shell up for the more expensive drives?

For sure higher but still not high, we’re talking single digit percentage failed drives per year with a massive sample size. TCO (total cost of ownership) might still come out ahead for Seagate being that they are many times quite a bit cheaper. Still drives failures are a part of the bargain when you’re running your own NAS so plan for it no matter what drive you end up buying. Which means have cash on hand to buy a new one so you can get up to full integrity as fast as possible. (Best is of course to always have a spare on hand but that isn’t feasible for a lot of us.).

Word. It’s ridiculous how hard it is to get good hits these days. And while GPT makes shit up sometimes it’s at least related to what I’m actually asking about. Google desperately wants to show the SEO optimized pages about something tangentially related instead of the page which actually has relevant information.

Getting a solid old forum hit for an obscure DNS issue takes a lot more work these days.

It’s Googles fault, but it’s not the algorithm getting worse, everyone is just too good at gaming it which fucks it up for everyone (the humanity special).

Title says pretty much all there is. Im just getting started in this and don’t want to go too crazy. Im willing to go as high as $250 right now which, when i look around, i know isn’t gonna get me anything absolutely amazing but hey back off im an instacart driver lol

Right, there’s only 2.5" bay ones standard. There are third party cases with 3.5" support. Though I guess 2.5" HDD works fine as well. At least 5 TB drives can be found for that form factor.

We’re not talking small organizations here, nor small projects. In those cases it’s true that you can’t “only” do prompt engineering but where I see it is in larger orgs where you bring into the team the know how about how to prompt efficiently, how to do refinement, where to do variable substitution and how, etc etc. The closest analogy is specific tech skills, like say DBs, for a small firm its just something one backend dude knows decently, at a large firm there are several DBAs and they help teams tackle complex DB questions. Same with say Search, first Solr and nowadays Elastic. Or for that matter Networks, in many cases there might be absolutely no one at the whole firm that knows anything more than the basics because you have another company doing it for you.

Huh, at least it’s Linux I guess? I’ve seen plenty Windows XP hanging around controlling expensive medical equipment and one time even a system were the control part was Windows 3.1. Air gapped not for security but because the server didn’t have a NIC.

As for my position it’s only that I hate how violence is somehow “justified” as if anything can give you the right to end someone else’s life. It might be considered naive, utopian or simplistic by some but it really isn’t. Almost every human subscribe to some level of sacredness of human life. Some extend it only to their family, some to all humans irregardless but we pretty much all agree that at least some life can’t be ended morally, be it kids or whatever. Just about everyone has at sometime been a sacred life in the eyes of the majority of humans, and that the reason they stopped being seen such is almost never grounded in factual, indisputable truth but opinion, prejudice, lies, circumstances and assumptions. If we, as most agree, see humans as fallible then we shouldn’t be able to declare someone’s life as no longer sacred and worth protecting. And from that simple position we can extrapolate that any active attempts to end someone’s life is amoral, the only moral kill is one in (proportional) self-defense. Which is of course what both Israel and Hamas argue they’re doing, to varying extent. It’s their main justification for why they’re (morally) in the right.

Up to there I think I have a good majority on board. Then people put vastly different things into what constitutes proportional self-defense. Which is what I assume you’re alluding to. Am I then right to think that your position as such is that it’s still self-defense and still proportional and the two bullet points are examples of when it stops being proportional?

I see you’ve edited to “restoration of peace”. What does that mean in a place that hasn’t seen peace for over 80 years? What “peace” are you referring too? The pre Oct 7 status quo? If so isn’t restoration of peace hinging on Israel leaving Gaza more so than anything else?

Random thought: Windows is largely successful because of Piracy

Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....

I don’t disagree with PCs being on a strong downward trend. But the point of Windows on PCs has always been familiarity such that it’s what’s prefered and feel easiest for servers. Without their domination of home PC no company would be running Windows Server these days. And the last people to stop using PCs at home are bound to be tech people that have some say in what type of servers to run.

That said Microsoft has been divesting from their reliance on Windows Server so it’s not like they’ll die from this. But it’s going to mean we’ll hopefully be rid of Windows Server soon!

Exactly, surely both will hate it. Classic parenting, if you can’t play nice no one can have it, puts toy on shelf. The really expensive part is building the infrastructure needed on the little space left to house all the people displaced. But hey work for a shit ton of people

I love the implication here, that they don’t have the proper source (or skills left in the company) such that they can remove the DRM which doesn’t play nice themselves so they rely on a cracked copy of the game instead. Been quite a bit of news lately about how game companies have failed to keep the original source code for their games. Diablo 2, the Transformers games etc and those from active companies, there’s bound to be 1000s of games where the source is lost due to publishers closing down studios.

Basically there’s Kobo and Kindle where I’m at that are good. For me I like a bit more premium stuff in terms of having decent build quality etc and that means it’s either Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Libre 2 that fits me. Both have proprietary shit software and their own bookstore but both can be side loaded. I generally prefer buying tried and tested hardware even if there probably exist some niche fully open source device out there but they tend to cost a lot more due to lacking scale of production. I wouldn’t however buy either of those new. I’ve setup reminders on second hand websites in my area and waiting till I find one in a good condition/price. Where I’m at that means for a almost unused device it should be about 10-20% below lowest historic price new. And older models around 50% below cost of a new model, naturally with a lot of variance depending on condition etc.

Depends on what you want in a buddy. Dogs are the obvious buddy choice since every dog actually wants to be your friend. I have a very dog-like cat who is very affectionate and follows along on walks etc but it’s hardly the norm.

But I do want to mention reptiles, especially crested geckos, as being a surprisingly practical pet and while you aren’t going to cuddle with them much they give you a lot of attention during feeding and are very calming to be around and watch while they roam around their terrarium. Sadly many lose interest fast but that means craigslist and similar websites are crawling with them so you can get a terrarium and gecko pretty cheap and if you live where the indoor climate is steady taking care of them is very easy and lower maintenance that both an indoor cat or a dog.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

I basically only use my phone these days and when third party apps died so did Reddit to me.
